Mission: The Genesis Legacy
ON
Iona was at the comm station, monitoring the away team when she suddenly lost contact. She tried to reestablish contact with the away team, but she could not. "Captain, we've lost contact with the away team." She initiated a diagnostic of the comms system to see what was going on.
John was sitting in his command chair sipping on a cup of coffee when the operations officer reported. Glancing up, he frowned. "Do we still have them on sensors?" he asked. If wasn't unheard of for communications to be lost with an away team, but it was odd for it to happen without a definite reason.
She ran a quick check. "Yes. They've reached the asteroid and appear to be in orbit of it."
Her station beeped that the diagnostic was complete. "Sir, diagnostic says that comms are fine, but I still can't hear anything from anywhere." It was eerie to hear silence when there should at least be some chatter from other ships in the area. Even in Romulan territory there was generally something.
John sighed as he thought through what he could remember on the Hyperion's operations systems. A short sytems check would only search for quick and easy to fix errors, however if the problem was hardware related, then a more detailed scan would be required. "Take communications offline and run through a full system wide diagnostic of all comm related systems," he ordered. Glancing over to Divaro, he nodded. "If there's any problem with the hard ware systems in the pod, I'll need you to send someone up there."
"Yes, sir." Iona quickly took communications offline and began a full diagnostic, hoping it would reveal something that could be fixed.
"Lieutenant Walker is my hardware specialist, Captain," Daniel responded. "She'll be ready if you need her."
The turbolift doors opened and out stepped Kaiyo. She wasn't usually seen on the bridge, or anywhere apart from the Astrometrics or the Stellar Cartography labs. Today however she had come upto the bridge for some reason. She turned a few heads at her unusual appearance, but that was to be expected.
She had been assigned to use the main Science Console while the Chief was off the ship. It only took her a few seconds to locate it, and she made her way over to it. This would be her first time ever at such a large and important station. The one thing she wasn't expecting was for the chairs on the bridge to spin, as soon as she climbed up into the chair it began to spin, so much she tumbled out of it with a small thud.
She looked up from the floor at the ceiling. "Spinny chairs..." she said outloud. "They don't work with tails" she commented. She pushed the chair away and chose to stand in front of the console instead. "Stepstool..." she muttered to herself. She clicked her fingers and used her tail to raise herself up.
"I have the science!" she said making a slight purring noise. "Wait..." she looked over at the captain still using her tail to lift herself off of the floor. "This sensor pod. It says that it has a problem with something called a magnetic lock. I have never heard of such a scanning method..." she explained.
John had been trying hard not to stare at the odd creature who had just taken over science. He had met Kaiyo, but hers was still an unusual and mostly unknown enough species for him to not be used to her, and he had never seen her on the bridge before. He was trying hard not to laugh or even smile when his brain registered what she had said. He sat up in his command chair, his expression completely dead serious. "Helm, full stop, station keeping!" he snapped. Turning towards Ops, he stood. "Double check the magnetic lock settings for the sensor pod," he ordered.
"On it," Iona said. A quick check confirmed it. "Sensors are glitching, but it definitely shows that there's a malfunction with a the mag locks on the sensor pod. At least one of them, anyway. It'll take someone going out there to see for sure."
John turned towards Lieutenant Commander Divaro. "Get a team suited up and get them out there. I want every inch of the roll bar and the pod checked. Take the Oceanus and every utility craft you need. I also want you to personally lead the team. We can't afford to lose that pod."
Kaiyo suddenly felt a little nervous. "I will use profanity to the deity that it wasn't me that damaged the pod" she said trying to use Human expressions and once again utterly failing.
John couldn't help but chuckle at the tiny science officer's wording. "I'm sure that it wasn't anything you did, Miss Kaiyo," he said formally, trying to hide a smile and failing.
"Aye sir..." Daniel said as he headed for the turbolift. As he entered, he tapped his combadge.=/\= Divaro to Lieutenant Walker. Get a repair crew together and meet me in engineering. We're about to take a little stroll outside...=/\=
John watched Divaro leave the bridge with a thoughtful and worried expression on his face before he finally turned towards operations. "Lieutenant Csira, maintain an open comm channel with the engineering team and coordinate their efforts with operations. See if your department can offer any assistance."

Daniel arrived at his office just ahead of his Assistant Chief Engineer. "I would have been here sooner," she told him. "But do you know how hard it is to find an enviro-suit to fit these?" she asked, indicating her ample chest. Daniel grinned slightly then said "I can see where that could be a problem. But the main thing is that you're here. Who did you get for the team?"
"Out of everyone who is on duty, you, me, and Setek."
"We'll have to do," he said. "When Setek gets here we'll head out."
"What's the problem anyway?" she asked.
"Magnetic locks on the pod are malfunctioning..." he answered. "We've got to find out what's wrong before we lose the whole damned thing."
"Well, if you want, we can have Setek meet us there," Karen suggested.
"Actually, have him suit up and get one of the workbees or even a Sphinx craft checked out. He may have to clear it with ops first," Divaro said.
