Mission: The Genesis Legacy
The day was beginning like any other on the Hyperion. John had grown tired of reading reports and working on the endless paperwork that ruled Starfleet like a plague and taken a break by walking around the bridge. It was probably making the bridge crew nervous to have the ships captain pacing about behind them, but it would be good for them. Everything seemed normal, so eventually John sat down in his command chair and leaned back. He had just sat down when a soft beeping alarm went off at the primary science station. Like everyone else, he turned his head towards the station.
JAs Jayde was still over security, she felt more comfortable at that station while the Captain was on the bridge. She raised one eyebrow and waited for Val to tell them what was going on.
Divaro was sitting at the engineering station, monitoring systems and stealing glances toward the science station when he thought no one was looking. Everything had been quiet so far and that was just fine with him when suddenly something drew his attention and it wasn't just Elan' but rather the beeping that suddenly came from her station.
Élan had been sitting at the science station, mostly because she had nothing else to do for the moment and she liked to occasionally grab some bridge time. Naturally, she figured that something would happen when she was hoping for a nice, quiet, boring day. Touching the controls on the primary science console, the Trill frowned at the readings for a moment. She had brought up the database that the Romulans had supplied the Hyperion with and felt her frown deepen more.
“Sir, long range sensors are detecting minimal to low moderate life signs coming from an asteroid field. It seems to be centered on a rather large asteroid. The data we have from the Romulans indicates that nothing’s there. The entire region is labeled as uninhabited and lifeless,” Élan reported.
"It sounds to me like we should investigate," Jayde said.
"I agree," John said with a nod. "Helm, plot an intercept course and engage at warp 2. Tactical, ready phasers and shields, just in case."
Galant III had his fingers neatly dancing across the controls like a pianist; the white dress uniform was unblemished. "Intercept course at warp Two Aye Sir." The ship was a lovely lady to guide through a dance of sorts. Taking the ship to Warp two for the intercept.
“I would recommend that we not proceed into the asteroid field with the Hyperion, rather a shuttle or even one of the runabouts, due to the density I’m seeing,” Élan recommended as she studied the sensor readings. She had to admit to herself that she secretly welcomed the chance to get off of the Hyperion for something out of the ordinary for a while.
John paused, not sure how to proceed. He understood the warning for caution, but he was hesitant to send an away team into an asteroid field without being able to back the team up if they ran into trouble. In the end, he sighed and nodded as he considered the options. "We'll try a shuttle based recon mission first. Have the shuttlebay crew prep the Atlas. If there's no obvious danger found in our first survey, we'll proceed with a team on a runabout. Commander Jayde, I'm sure you'll protest if I try to join the team, so I'll leave it up to you on who to send."
Jayde didn't need to confirm the obvious. "A runabout would give us more room to maneuver," she said.
John almost shook his head, feeling slightly outnumbered by his first officer and chief of science. "Alright, alright," he said. "Commander, put together an away team and have the shuttlebay crew ready the Helios for mission deployment."
"Yes, sir," Jayde said. She turned to Val. "Care to join me?"
“Absolutely!” Élan said, unable to contain or hide her excitement. Not only did she get to join on the Hyperion’s first away mission, but she would be able to use the Helios, which she thought of as her departments and by extension her own runabout in doing so.
"I want Balor, who do you want?" she asked Val. As Élan was the Chief Science Officer, Jayde wanted her input on the composition of the away team.
“I’d like to request Lieutenant Sato and the Master at Arms to be added to the away team,” Élan replied. “In addition, Commander, I would like to request that it be considered adding our Romulan liaison officer as well.”
"I am assigning the best pilot on the ship sir." Gallant said as he motioned for his replacement. "Pre-flight will be ready when you are ready sir."
“Please tell me you’re going to change out of that dress uniform before we launch,” Élan said, giving the helm officer a look of slight confusion.
""What is wrong with my uniform ma'am?" He asked.
"Agreed," Jayde said, answering Val's suggestion and curtailing any further discussion about Gallant's attire. "And the doctor, just in case. "Twenty minutes should be more than sufficient."
"Do you think you need an extra few security guards since you're taking our resident Romulan?" John asked Jayde, concern showing briefly across his face before he managed to hide it.
"We'll have two, myself included," Jayde said. "And Commander Balor. The three of us will be sufficient." She had no doubt the three of them could deal with one Romulan if she chose to cause trouble. Although Jayde didn't think she would.
"Very well, I'll have her escorted to the shuttlebay," John said with a nod.
Jayde nodded. "Thank you, Captain."
She turned to Élan. "I will meet you in the shuttle bay." She bowed to the Captain and the scientist and headed for security to prepare.
Gallant III was on his way out wondering why they are having such problems with his attire? "I shall fetch my flight geaqr and meet you in the Shuttle Bay." He mentioned just before the doors closed.
