Mission: Into the Raptor's Shadow
Location: Holodeck 2

[CONTINUED]

[OLD]

Tristan observed the others attempt to land a shot on Jayde, and Liang, several times before it came to his turn. He paused for a moment, looking over to Jayde and Liang before placing the phaser back down on the table. "Given your training, the way the phaser has be adjusted, and your choice of weapon the task is in your favor. I see no point in attempting something that was clearly altered to be in your favor. However, I am interested to see more so please continue."

[NEW]

Jayde gave Tristan a Vulcan half-bow in acknowledgement of his statement. He was right. This part of the challenge was definitely "rigged."

Velah fired a shot at the woman; she was her target as she seemed to have the stance of a master and if she were going to take this to the logical level she was in her way.

Liang deftly dodged the shot.

Velah then rushed teh woman and fired another salvo as she went to do a spring kick and see if she would deflect her and maybe give Velah an opening for the final shot. The kick she never extended to the kick and just landed and continued into a crouch, allow gravity to bring her down and into a leg sweep; thus making her have to evade and while she oped off balance a bit to get that last shot.

The move gave Liang time to get into position. She knocked the phaser out of Velah's hand and then spun around to trip the woman.

When everyone had taken a turn, Liang nodded. "The purpose of this demonstration is that you should not rely on technology and modern weaponry. You never know when it will fail you -- even if you think it will not."

"What we wish to teach you over the next few weeks is how to use what is in your environment -- beyond your own body. If you plan for the unexpected, you will not be caught off guard and you will have the element of surprise -- at least the first time."

"Now, you have seen how you can defend against phaser fire," Liang said. "I want you to spend the next five minutes finding something you can use as a weapon on the holodeck. Then I want you to pair up and fight each other."

John raised his eyebrows but he silently nodded and turned to wander the holodeck for a few minutes. The choice of setting made for some interesting choices as far as weapons went, but the captain finally settled on a simple but sturdy looking hand and a half sword. Like the majority of weapons in training programs, the edge was blunt but appeared sharp. As he returned to the training area, John couldn't help but wonder if Jayde had deactivated any of the safeties on the holodeck.

Élan could feel Val’s excitement as she selected a quarterstaff as her chosen weapon and returned to the training area. Val’s previous host had spent three years on the Academy’s armed martial arts team, and Élan herself had taken martial arts as an elective. Strangely, she felt more comfortable in close quarters combat than she did at ranged, but she still felt just a little nervous. It had been over a year since she had done any sparring and the Trill had to admit that she was a little rusty, whereas both the chief security officer and the master at arms had to train nearly every day in a wide range of combat styles to meet the requirements of their positions. It would prove to be interesting.

Velah had wondered about and found that the weapon selection was not to her liking; she found a broom off to the side; a simple kick separated the staff from the broom. She looked about and found two red placemats squres which she tied to the ends of the staff then snapped the shaft into equal parts. There was a chinese practice off putting 'distractions' on the end of spears to help confound the enemy as the material was partly obscruring and if lucky the enemy flinched as the material neared their face making them more defensive and off their ready stances. It was a gamble but she had some hope. Two 'Escirma' sticks would put her on more even terms with the fighters. Her practice of Capoeria used these sticks as they could also beat the large drums as well as being weapons.

Rushing back she wanted another shot at the master; she knew she could not beat her unless she had the blessing of Luck and Destiny, her intension was to not let anyone of them think twice about her as a typical helpless Orion Girl. Five years of training she was a very adapt student and now she would put her fighting to the task. Most people saw just an Orion, Velah is far more than that.

She could fight hand to hand better than a phaser for sure.

Liang raised an eyebrow at Velah's choice of weapon, but said nothing as she was following the stated rules.

"Now, choose a partner," Jayde said. "The safeties have been lowered just enough to permit a good bruising, but not to cause any serious injuries." She wanted them to be careful and not simply assume that they would be protected by the holodeck.

Velah went to Master Liang and with her hands by her sides she gave a bow to the Master; the challenge as is proper, and waited the reply.

Liang returned the bow, then took a defensive position with her staff.

Velah had the rhythm in her mind at which she wanted to participate, the sound of the congas in her mind setting her balance and footwork as she took the advance; she did not like being aggressive yet this is training so she had to see what she would be getting into? With a careful probing and the sway of her style to back her and make her harder to predict, Velah set to the 'dance' that is the basis of Capoera. in the mix of steps she took some probing strikes with her two sticks alternating the blows with the music in her head.

In the interim, before Velah had begun to face off against Liang, he had found what appeared to be a section of fiber-optic conduit made of duranium that was about 3 feet long and looked like it could be a good weapon for him. As he hefted it, shifting it from one hand to the other, he wondered who he would be pitted against.
