Mission:
Pathways
Location: Chief Engineer's Office
Timeline: Current - Right after 'Meeting the XO'
ON:
Immediately after leaving the Executive Officer's quarters, Daniel had gone straight to his office in engineering. He had pulled up the list of engineering personnel he had available and began calling in the ones he wanted for shift leaders and assistants. He had also called for Karen Walker so that he might introduce her to the shift leaders.
The crew at Utopia Planitia had done an excellent job outfitting the Hyperion from all Divaro could see. But everything was new and untried and because of that he knew that everything had to be tested--over and over again--until he was satisfied that the equipment would run faultlessly. He looked out of the window across Main Engineering--watching Alpha Shift going off duty and Gamma Shift preparing to come on. He had called in his senior crewmen for a meeting at 1600 concerning the shift assignments for the upcoming mission.
====== 1600 Hours ======
As he continued to watch, he saw the ones he had called for approaching his door--Crossman, Martin, Marceau, Burleyson, Pugh, and Pearce. He waited as they came in and sat down, then he began.
"Okay, people...here's what's up. I have made your shift assignments...Effective immediately, Crossman will be in charge of Beta Shift with Burleyson as her assistant. Marceau will be in charge of Gamma Shift with Pearce as his assistant. Martin is on Alpha Shift with Pugh as her assistant." He stopped for a moment and looked over the group.
"Next I'd like for you to meet your new assistant Chief Engineer," he said as he motioned for Karen to step forward. "This is Lieutenant Karen Walker. She's got over ten years' experience in different engine rooms and with various EPS systems, so she knows what she's doing. She's also not bad looking and single for all you singles out there," he added with a wink at Walker. "Now--here is the way I am setting up the chain of command in engineering: Engineering personnel will report to the Shift Assistants; Shift Assistants report to the Shift Leaders; Shift Leaders report to the assistant CEO; and lastly, the assistant CEO reports to me. If there is a problem, I expect you to follow the chain of command. Jumping the chain of command will NOT win you any favors--This I guarantee you. Is that clear?" Daniel nodded slowly as he heard and saw various forms of assent. "Good. Then we understand each other."
"We've got a LOT of diagnostics to be run on these new systems as we bring the warp drive on line. I figure the new captain will want to shove off in about 48 hours. To reiterate, I want EVERYthing checked--This includes the warp core; EPS system; Bussard Ramscoops; transport and replicator conduits; structural integrity fields; gravity field generators;auxiliary fusion generators and the like. We WILL be ready! Any questions?"
"Are we going to have a briefing on what exactly this mission will be?" This from Karen Walker.
"Yes," Divaro answered. "I will let you know what I can when I get information from the command staff. Now let's get down to what needs to be done right now. I want level 3 diagnostics started on every piece of equipment and electrical system in this department. I have PADDs prepared for each shift leader detailing exactly what has to be done. I want reports of everything that has been done, checked and re-checked on my desk by 0800. I also want full reports on ships' stores of raw materials. Now, anything else?" He looked at each of them, and hearing no questions, he continued. "Ok--let's get to it..."
