Mission:
Pathways
Location: USS Proxima, Utopia Planitia
The corridors of the Proxima were quiet as John walked to the captain's quarters, the quarters that were now no longer his. With the Proxima hard docked at Utopia Planitia and most of the crew gone, it wasn't surprising. The Proxima would be there for several weeks, and the crew hadn't had shore leave in almost a year. He had already talked to the Proxima's XO, soon Admiral Vokar would be in touch with him, so all John had to do now was break the final piece of news to his wife. Arriving at the doors to his soon to be old quarters, John paused and took a deep breath before he entered.
"John!" the very well proportioned woman on the couch unfolded and practically charged at John as he walked into the quarters. Mara was elegant in her own way. Half Bajoran and half Cardassian, she had the grace, beauty and strength of someone who could be both your greatest friend and worse nightmare. Despite being married for so many years, they had rarely ever fought, although John wasn't sure just how Mara would take the news. He caught her before she could slam him into the bulkhead and hugged her before he held her at arm’s length.
"You may not like what I'm about to tell you," he said.
"Does it have something to do with the fact that I had to direct seven yeomen in packing and carrying all of our things to the shuttle bay?" Mara asked, raising her eyebrow. John blinked and finally looked around the cabin, the very empty cabin.
"Oh, hell, Vokar didn't say anything about this," he muttered.
"So, where are they transferring you to and how much did you argue it?" Mara asked as she took a step back and wrapped a shawl around her shoulders before she sat back down on the couch.
"Um, I didn't argue the transfer, Mara," John said as he sat down on the couch beside her. "They gave me the Hyperion."
"Ok. Pretend that I don't know what that means. What is the Hyperion?" Mara asked.
"The newest and most advanced Luna class starship Starfleet has," John said, not bothering to hide the fact that he was excited about that fact.
"A Luna class? Those new deep space exploration ships?"
"Yes. And Hyperion has the one mission directive that no one else in Starfleet has ever gotten before," John said.
"Spare me the mystery and tell me," Mara growled.
John smiled. "The Hyperion has been given special clearance by the Romulan government to explore their territory and the Beta Quadrant beyond their borders," he said.
"That actually sounds lovely," Mara said. John knew full well that the further away from Cardassia and Bajor they were, the happier she was. Her mixed heritage had made her an outcast by both societies, and her opinion of Bajorans and Cardassians wasn't exactly in favor of either. "I take it that since all of our belongings have been absconded by that pack of petty officers, we're leaving soon?" Mara asked, breaking through John's thoughts.
"Immediately, in fact," John said. "I actually grabbed a shuttle that's supposed to be assigned to the Hyperion before I came here. It's in the shuttle bay right now."
"Good," Mara said as she stood. Wrapping her around her husband, she followed as he led her out into the corridor and towards the shuttle bay.
