1,641 words; about a 8 minute read

Mission: Into the Raptor's Shadow
Location: Velah's Quarters
Timeline: Current

ON:

Velah is sure they are having fun; having not seen her father in so long it is natural that they might be a little late; Sassy has a way of making time seem to slow but in reality it remains a constant. He should have brought her by nearly an hour and a half ago; it was getting late and Sassy is not one to be easily motivated in the morning. If she is tardy on the frirst day of her new schooling program Daniel would have to order a new head for his shoulders after Velah bites his head off.

Velah had taken time in chosing her wardrobe, a soft antique colored mini dress, a one piece as it was just for Daniel's presence that she had even put something on that was of regular clothing. She had her hair loose as she liked it and since in her own quarters comfortable in her bare feet. She could slip on shoes and be out the door should it be required; if they are much later it might come to that but mostly Daniel coming in made her not want to be in her usual short housecoat, comforting and alluring she was told her silken robes were so soft to her skin it helped her relax and Sassy usually wore a nightshirt and shorts as she did not quite have the Orion blood fully allowing Sassy to be comfortable in just a shirt or robe and... well Daniel was coming in so attire befitting was required. No use in giving the wrong impression so dressing like she could go out or entertain company seemed the polite attire to wear.

She had seated herself on the cozy love seat with a glass of red wine, a padd with some reports to be reviewed and a casual demeanor to all appearances. Secretly she wanted to pace; her daughter had been gone for days with her father; it was the beginning of what Velah feared, her baby growing up and starting to not need to be around the nest. Sassy acted like a teenager when she was 8 to a degree but with Daniel around it felt like Sassy was out and about more.

A nice sip of the wine; and another just for the taste and the calming sa she popped a cracker with cheese into her mouth. There were some advantages to not having Sassy around; she wanted to admit, like enjoying the tray of treats and not keeping stock of it it is low or not, nor the need to be ready to get up and make more for er and Sassy. It is a relaxing time and were Daniel on time this would have been almost paradise, but not at the moment waiting. She would keep herself relaxed as a fight is not the best way to start a meeting that will occur whenever Sassy goes to her father's place.

"Always about his fun, that is where she gets it." Velah said as she paged through the report.

As Daniel and Sassi were headed back to Velah's quarters, he thought about what a good time the two of them had had over the past two days. He had shown her around engineering, taken her to the arboretum, and even had some time in the holodeck. In fact, that's why they were late now. He had created a program for the Santa Cruz Boardwalk in Santa Cruz, California and between the rides, the games, and the concessions on the midway, they had lost track of time.

"So do you think your mom is going to be mad because we're late?" Daniel asked her.

"Probably..." Sassi said after a moment's thought. "But it was worth it."

Just then they arrived at Velah's quarters and Sassi entered her code. "Hi mom..." she said as they walked in. "Dad is with me."

"Velah..." Daniel said simply, giving her a slight nod.

"Daniel." Velah stood and started to meet her daughter. "Mey Dee Un."[My Dear One] She kissed to forehead. "Tomorrow is a school day." She smiled. "You should get your shower and ready for bed."

"Yes ma'am..." Sassi said. She then turned her attention to Daniel. "Good night dad..." she said, hugging him tightly. "I had a good time this weekend."

"So did I sweetie..." Daniel said as he looked at his daughter, realizing how she was quickly turning from a little girl to a young woman. She looked so much like her mother although her skin wasn't as dark. But in every other way she reminded him so much of Velah. "You be thinking of what you'd like to do next time and I will see you in a few days."

"Sure dad..." she answered before turning and walking out of the room.

'When did it become 'dad' and not 'daddy'? ' he thought to himself. Then he turned to Velah. "The way she's growing up, I'm thinking it may not be long before I'm having to stand at your door with a phaser in hand to keep all the young men at bay."

"She will be fine, at least her biology is not fully Orion so no dealing with those added factors." Velah chuckled. "I was thinking of tranquilizer pistol."

"I think we need to talk," Daniel said to his ex-wife. "Just to sort of establish some ground rules in this situation."

Daniel, you look like you had a good time." Velah said as she looked for the first time at her ex-husband. "Sassy had fun, I can tell, thank you." She kept her mind flowing with the reports she had been reading and so he could not get a good read upon her. "She will be yours at the end of the week after school and the responsible things." Velah started. "The ground rules are in the terms you pushed for." Velah sighed. "I am not the Minx you tried to have me portrayed; I had a chat with the Captain, he fully expected a tigress, I think he was almost nervous at the sight of me when he first met me. So what impression did he get, my records show I am quite tame, even for an Orion?"

"I haven't spoken to Captain Theisman since you came aboard so I honestly couldn't tell you what his impression of you is." Daniel looked at her for a long moment before continuing. "And in my defense, you need to know that my description of you to him came after a night of drinking the night he told me you were being assigned here. So my judgment and descriptions may have been somewhat altered by alcohol. But the next opportunity I have, I will tell him that your bark is worse than your bite--usually." The last word was added with a grin at her. "And by the way, just for your information--she does have a name..."

"Typical male, talk about the Ex over drinks and should I dare put in an 'Orion Ex-wife' would really require drinking to fully understand how I am?" She replied. "I presume you are referring to some woman?" She raised an eyebrow.

"I'm referring to the woman that my grandmother obviously told you that I brought to their trattoria in Noceto," Daniel said. "Her name is Lieutenant Elan' Val and she is a science officer here on the Hyperion."

"I didn't ask, nor was I going to." Velah said with an innocent smile. "I figured you would have your target sights locked on someone and if it were not the one you brought to meet your family; quite a statement if you ask me, then it would be someone else but your love life is not my concern anymore and why do you need my opinion, or are you expecting my absolution to date her while I am on board?"

"I did not take her there to meet my family," Daniel said. "I took her there because it was a nice place to go for dinner. I did not expect my grandmother to be there at that time of evening. And I do not need, nor am I looking for, your opinion or absolution. I'm free to see whomever I wish as are you. I only brought up the subject because you referred to her as 'the spotted chick' which to me is as uncalled-for as you seem to think my referring to you as my 'Orion ex-wife'."

"Is that one of these 'Ground Rules' that you wish to discuss?" She asked.

"It is..." Daniel said slowly. "After all, would you appreciate it if she were to refer to you as 'that green woman'? I don't believe she ever would but I think you can see my point.

"I do recall you calling me much worst than that." Velah laughed. "I am sure she has something not polite if she thinks I am going to make trouble, but while on the subject what about the rules to not confuse Sassi? Like how serious is it before she meets the ... potential?" Velah asked. "She knows I date but I do not bring them around unless it is quite serious. I will do my 'seeing of other people when she is with you so not to draw attention. Only if I am ready to be short of moving in with them will Sassi meet the potential." Velah said calmly. "She has yet to meet a man I dated."

"I don't recall having called you anything bad, Velah..." Daniel said quietly. "And as for Elan', well you don't have to worry about Sassi meeting her right away. You see, Elan' and I are on a bit of a...break...right now."
