Mission:
Into the Raptor's Shadow
Location: Velah's Quarters
Timeline: Current - Immediately after Rapport (Part 1)
ON:
OLD:
"I do recall you calling me much worst than that." Velah laughed. "I am sure she has something not polite if she thinks I am going to make trouble, but while on the subject what about the rules to not confuse Sassi? Like how serious is it before she meets the ... potential?" Velah asked. "She knows I date but I do not bring them around unless it is quite serious. I will do my 'seeing of other people when she is with you so not to draw attention. Only if I am ready to be short of moving in with them will Sassi meet the potential." Velah said calmly. "She has yet to meet a man I dated."
"I don't recall having called you anything bad, Velah..." Daniel said quietly. "And as for Elan', well you don't have to worry about Sassi meeting her right away. You see, Elan' and I are on a bit of a...break...right now."
NEW:
"In the heat of arguments we both had 'creative names' we used." Velah said. "More to the point is what did you do to put a dampener on this so quickly, I mean I have not been on the ship hardly three days, that makes it hard for me to have done anything?"
"I had told her when we first started seeing each other that I was divorced. I did NOT tell her that I had a 13-year-old daughter right then, but once I found out that you and Sassi were coming to live here I told her. That, and the fact that my ex-wife was being permanently assigned to the Hyperion, well, let's just say that it did not go over well. So, she's taking some time to come to terms with everything. I haven't seen her for three weeks now."
"I am sorry she is not understanding to the fact I came on board; I can say Joseph did not take it all that well when I told him the transfer was in process." She let her expression soften a little. "However three weeks of thinking does make for an interesting evaluation of the relationship; you sure you really want a woman that because of some bump in the road gets spooked?"
"I don't think it's so much that she isn't understanding and I also don't think it's as much about you as it is about me..." Daniel said. "I think it's just that she was basically blindsided by everything and it's going to take a little while for her to come to grips with everything." He took a deep breath before continuing. "I mean, put yourself in her shoes. I may be projecting WAY into the future but just suppose she and I DID end up with a permanent arrangement. She would be inheriting a ready-made family and that would take some adjustment for anyone.
"Thinking like that would be a factor." Velah said. "She might be the type to have a more whimsical relationship at first, you might quit trying to fix it as a woman hates that."
"I'm not trying to 'fix' anything," Daniel answered. "She asked for time to come to grips with everything and I agreed to it. That's all." Daniel looked down at the floor for a beat, then back at Velah. "Elan' is a very smart and caring woman and I think when the time is right our relationship will continue."
"I could hope you get lucky in that hope." Velah told him. "You know that what I really want is for us both to be happy?" She had sincerity in her tone as she gave him a smile. "It just will not be together so finding someone else is the only option." She mentioned.
"I agree wholeheartedly," Daniel said with a nod. "I have my daughter here and I have someone whom I believe cares about me a lot. Why would I not be happy?"
"You tell me?" Velah said; she knew the man for years and the expression on his face was not backing up his words. "Is that the face of a Happy Divaro?"
"Actually it IS the face of a happy Daniel Divaro, because I feel that everything between Elan' and I will work out," Daniel said slowly. "I think she just needs the time to process everything. You know that there are always a few bumps in any relationship. Even when we were married, things weren't perfect--and I don't expect things to be perfect always."
"I will take your word for it." Velah shrugged. "But you are not convincing me." She almost chuckled. "Remember there is nothing more than good intentions with human nature."
"You always could see through me in most cases," Daniel said. "But in this case I assure you, I really and truly am okay." He studied Velah for a long moment, then continued. "I will confess to being a bit apprehensive about this mission though. You realize that we will be gone for seven years, right? I mean, by the time this mission is over and we're once again back in Federation space, our little girl will be a grown woman."
Her eyes became smaller like slits. "Yes I am 'Quite' aware of that fact, it is why I am here Daniel." Velah added. "At least she will have life's experiences that she would not get on a station, but are there any other 'things to speak about."
"Not that I can think of," he answered. "Unless you have any concerns you'd like to discuss?"
"No Mr Divaro." Velah said with a raised eyebrow. "Though I think you can safely walk Sassy like a gentleman to her door and bid her good night." She nodded.
"So what are you saying? That I'm not welcome here?" he asked.
"I just think we need to discuss our personal lives and rehash terms with each time we exchange Sassy or find a neutral point as I like to have things serene at the home front. Chit chat about whom we are dating or seeking to date does not seem a subject for divorcee conversation."
"I wasn't aware that telling you her name was chit chatting about her," Daniel said. "And I only did that so that you wouldn't keep referring to her as 'the spotted chick'. So as far as I'm concerned, the subject is done--unless you have any questions or anything you'd like to add."
Thinking for a second she just gave him that neutral smile that she had learned so long ago. "We are divorced, this is a small ship when you think we will be on it for seven years; I like having a safe haven where I can relax. Other than Sassy we do not really talk so why stat now; that family is not going to be back. I have come to like my little domain Daniel; please realize that; I have no intentions of coming to your space as well so the rest of the ship is open grounds."
"If you're concerned that I would ever try to get back into your bed, rest assured that's the furthest thing from my mind," Daniel said. "I make it a practice to never go back over old ground that's already been covered--especially when it's obvious that I'm not wanted. After all, a farmer doesn't go back and plow old ground that he's already covered. He finds new ground that hasn't been disturbed."
"It was an even more simple; not aggressive nor implying you could get back there, just a letting each of us have our space." Velah chuckled a little. "I have my private sanctuary and you have yours. I do wonder why I mention your 'space' and rather than quarters you jump right into a bed?" She tilted her head. "I meant I would not come to your quarters as that is one place on the ship totally yours; I have no desire nor right to enter. I have not had a man in 'That' space in my quarters since we were separated." She laughed.
"I remember how things were with us and I guess I just assumed that you would think I would attempt to seduce you." He smiled in return. "Believe me, that's the furthest thing from my mind right now." He looked at her for a long moment, then added. "I noticed you're not wearing one of your silk robes as you used to."
"I did wear regular clothing when having guests." Velah said. "Would not be appropriate; did not want to give you the wrong idea and wearing my usual robe seemed like that could be mistaken by any man. An Orion in a silk robe; well we know where most minds go under those conditions." She gave that cat like sly grin. "It was best to make sure the ROE's are in place."
"I agree," Daniel said. "I just wanted it to be perfectly clear that I have no romantic interest in you whatsoever any more. We share a daughter and that is all, so you have nothing to fear from me on that account."
"Well now that we know the obvious." Velah said. "Is there any other matters to discuss as I have a daughter to continue with her nightly routine and this is a school night so I think it would be more calming if her father were not here to get her all excited again." She raised an eyebrow.
"I can't think of anything else so I suppose that's my invitation to leave?" he asked with a grin as he stood up. "If you have any other questions or concerns, you know where to find me."
"You are not unwelcome Daniel." Velah said. "Just need to get accustomed to having you about, I kind of got used to not seeing you. I will not in any way hinder your reunions with Sassi; it is why I came, to be with Sassi as well. And I will call if I need, no sense in my invading your spaces. I know Sassi will favor you for a while; she needs to do that. It will get to a routine in time, I am aware of it from the get go so no worries okay?"
"Agreed," Daniel said as he turned toward the door. "Tell Sassi I said 'good night' and that I love her very much." And with that, he walked out of Velah's quarters.
Once outside, the first thought that came to his mind was 'that wasn't as painful as I thought it might be--but I'm not sure I'd want to go through it again any time soon.' His next thought was of Elan'. 'I wonder if she has been able to forgive me yet, because I surely miss her and would like to see her again...'
