Mission:
Into the Raptor's Shadow
Location: Main Engineering
Timeline: Current - After Meeting Engineering
ON:
Daniel was sat at his desk, the ship's systems efficiency reports displayed on his computer terminal in front of him. He had just finished a meeting with the ship's new chief of security and he should be studying the efficiency reports. But he was finding it increasingly difficult to concentrate on the task at hand due to the fact that his mind kept wandering. Not nearly enough to put the ship or her crew in danger, but enough to keep him from concentrating on his terminal. Why? The answer was simple, really. It was all because of a beautiful, statuesque, dark-haired Trill named Elan' Val. He had met her just after reporting aboard and to be honest, she had stolen his heart.
The thought fleetingly crossed his mind--'Was it possible to miss someone you had only recently met?' and was almost immediately followed by the answer 'You damn right it is...' He had not seen her in almost three weeks and he missed her terribly. He allowed his mind to drift back to that time just over five weeks ago to their first proper date. He had taken her to La Spezia, his grandparents' trattoria in Noceto, Italy.
They had shared a bottle of wine with their dinner, then after dessert, they had also shared kisses in the moonlight across the little candlelit table. He had hoped to take her for a stroll along the beach, but all too soon it had been time for them to go back to the ship. Once back aboard the Hyperion, they had exchanged a VERY passionate kiss at her door and he had said good night to her.
He did not see her at all the next day due to their schedules, and it was later that night he had found out from Captain Thiesman that his ex-wife and daughter were being assigned to the Hyperion. At that point, Daniel knew what his course of action had to be: He had to tell Elan'. She knew that he was divorced--he had told her that the first night in the Arboretum. She did NOT, however, know about his daughter Sassi or that they were to be boarded once the Hyperion reached Starbase 171--and in the interests of honesty he knew he had to tell her. And so he'd had her meet him in the lounge and he had told her. In hindsight, perhaps the lounge had not been the best place to tell her. Perhaps it should have been in his office or one of their quarters.
To say that their meeting had not gone well would have been quite the understatement. In reality it had been a disaster. Her reaction had ultimately been to throw her drink in his face and to storm out, leaving him sitting there alone.
The next time he had seen her was two weeks later. It had been in her quarters and the meeting seemed to be a bit more amicable, but she still had not been able to completely forgive him. They had discussed several things, but ultimately she had told him she wasn't ready to fully forgive him and so he had left. Just before walking out of her quarters, however, he had almost told her something. He had almost said "I love you..." but he had caught himself. Not that he didn't care deeply for her--he did--but he figured it was still too soon for him to say those three words to her. She would think it too early--and perhaps it was. All he knew was that, without her around, there seemed to be a hole in hi heart the size of the galaxy and he wondered when he would ever see her again...
"...boss...hey, boss...Chief...?" came the questioning call. Then..."Hey! DANIEL...!!" Daniel suddenly snapped back to the present to see his buxom Assistant Chief Engineer standing practically over him.
"Huh...? Wha...? Oh, uh...sorry. I was just thinking..."
"Yeah, you were thinking alright--thinking about things other than engineering would be my guess..." Walker said. "And I'll bet I know exactly what you were thinking about--HER!" She almost spit the last word at him. "Tall, dark, and spotty in the Science Lab, hmm...?" she questioned, still wondering what it was that the Trill science officer had to offer that she didn't.
"Actually, I...well...it doesn't matter..." he said finally. "What did you need, Karen?" he asked, attempting to quickly change the subject and get back to business.
Walker knew she had hit home with her guess as to who he was thinking of, but she also knew that it would do no good for her to press the subject with him. It would only serve to make him mad. "Actually I was just wondering if you had finished going over those system efficiency reports?"
"Ah, no--not quite," Daniel said quickly. "I'll let you know as soon as I'm done."
"Okay," she said as she started for the door. "Maybe you should try concentrating on ships' work instead of trying to figure out how far down those spots go..." she shot back at him with a cheeky grin.
