Mission: Ghost of a Chance: Epilogue
Evelyn walked along the corridor of S'klar Station beside Commander Jayde, her hands clasped behind her back as they walked in silence back to the transporter room. She could sense her new first officer's unhappiness, and after a while Evelyn slowed her stride and half turned towards Jayde. "I want you to know, I argued with Admiral Bates from the time the Columbia picked me up until right before you and Captain Theisman arrived. I don't agree with how Theisman was sidelined over a political squeamishness. I didn't know him personally, but I've read his service record and I read the same reports Bates did. I think you all did an excellent job, despite the situation."
"Thank you, that is most appreciated." She bowed to the captain. "Most of the crew will be grateful as well. You should be aware that Commander Smoak does not agree with Captain Theisman's actions. I believe he filed a complaint, although I have not seen it." She paused for a moment. "Also for your information, I will be filing a formal complaint to Starfleet Command. Nothing against you, as I believe you will be a fine replacement, but because I do not believe the injustice should stand unchallenged."
"If you want, I'd be willing and happy to add my signature to your complaint," Evelyn said as they arrived at the transporter room. "I hope that you and the rest of the crew will help me as we all adjust to this change. I know that my style of command will be different than Theisman's, and we'll going to have a lot of adjustments to get through."
"Your signature would be appreciated," she replied. "There will be an adjustment, as this change is unexpected, but I will do what I can to help smooth your way."
"I'd appreciate it greatly," Evelyn said as they arrived at the transporter room. Entering, they headed directly for the pad and took their places. "Commander, if you would do the honors?"
Jayde nodded. She addressed the transporter officer in Romulan. "We are ready to return to our ship now."
The Romulan nodded and they felt the transporter activate.
[Transporter Room One.]
Velah made her way to the Transporter Room; being a Commander Rank her presence was requested. For this more formal occasion she had also worn the Black Tights with her Skirted Uniform. She stood with her relaxed nature leaning on the wall with her legs crossed at the ankle and her arms crossed while she waited casually.
Liang received word that Captain Theisman and Jayde had been summoned to the station and she was concerned. So, when she heard that some of the senior officers were to report to the transporter room, she decided it would be prudent to show up as well.
She bowed to Velah when she entered the room and stayed in the back to observe and be out of the way.
Smoak made his way into the transporter room. He said nothing and remained in the background with his arms cross over his chest.
When the Hyperion's transporter room materialized, Jayde looked around and stepped off the pad. "May I introduce Captain Evelyn Knight, the new commander of the Hyperion." She turned to the captain. "May I present Commander Velah, our Chief Medical Officer, Commander Jason Smoak, our Chief of Security, and Master Chief Liang Shao, our Master-at-Arms."
At the first activation of the Transporter Velah had straightened and smoothed her skirt so when the introductions were made she was ready. She gave a polite bow when her name was mentioned.
Evelyn took a step down off of the transporter pad with her hands still clasped behind her back. Looking at each officer in turn, she offered a small smile and nodded to each before she addressed the room entirely. "Everyone, by order of Starfleet Command, Captain Theisman has been reassigned. Effective immediately, under direct orders from Starfleet Command, I hereby assume command of the USS Hyperion. I understand that there will be a period of adjustment for everyone, myself included. All I ask is that you bear with me as there will be changes in the days to come."
Velah managed to keep a proper expression.
"I hope you will make a point of visiting the Sick Bay so I might get a baseline on you while we are in port Captain." Velah suggested.
Smoak narrowed his eyes slightly at the new Captain, but not because he was suspicious of her. It was because he wasn't expecting Theisman to not be here. He looked down for a minute and closed his eyes. He felt guilt, even though he hid it well from everyone else. Did he do this? Was his report responsible? This isn't what he intended, but this was the result. He finally looked back up and decided. This was the result and he had to fix it. It might not put things back to where things were, but it was the right thing to do.
Liang bowed to the new captain. She would need to talk to Jayde later.
Jayde glanced at Velah and Jason, then nodded to Liang. She turned to the captain. "Where would you like to go first, ma'am?"
"The bridge, and then I'll find my way to the commanding officer's ready room," Evelyn replied. "I need to go over the ship's logs in detail and plot our course away from here. And then, I suppose I'll have to make time to visit sickbay," she added with a smile towards the Orion medical officer.
Jayde nodded and let the way to the turbolift to the bridge. She paused there to see who else would be joining them.
Smoak watched Jayde, and the new Captain, pass and just observed. He did his best to not make eye contact with Jayde before turning around to watch them. With his arms still crossed over his chest, he leaned back against the outside wall and observed everyone. Waiting to see how long it would take Liang and the others to scurry off behind them.
Velah nod to the Captain. "I look forward to seeing you." She added as she waited for the Captain to head to the bridge.
Her place is in Sick Bay; she glanced at Smoak. "Going for the strong silent type." She asked after the group had left.
"I just have a lot on my mind, Doctor." Smoak replied softly. "Please make sure my new officers have had there medical examinations done. Especially the only gentlemen, Master Chief MacLeod. Leave no stone unturned."
"I like to think I make a friendly Sick Bay." She mused. "But I will make sure you all get your exams."
Liang didn't move. She was observing. Jayde, who was carefully controlled on the outside, but there was an undercurrent of anger that she could sense coming from her friend. From Commander Smoak she sensed guilt and something more she could not put her hand on. The doctor was as always. And the new captain. Well, she seemed to be a woman of integrity, which the crew needed. Still, the change at this time would be difficult for many. Perhaps she needed to begin a new meditation class?
Jason walked to the turbolift and then stopped. He turned to Liang and gesture inside, unsure if she would join them or not.
"No, thank you, but no," she said, bowing to the commander. "I will not be accompanying the rest of you."
Jason raised a brow, almost curious, before shrugging his shoulders and proceeding inside. He leaned against the wall in the corner and kept his head down.
Jayde wasn't sure what to say to Jason. This was not his fault, and she did not blame him for the outcome, but his reaction when she did not agree with him still haunted her. She pushed the button and, when the door opened, stepped onto the turbolift.
Jayde indicated that the captain should be first to step off the turbolift. "Welcome to your new home," she said. "If you do not mind, I will let you find your own way. I shall return shortly." She needed to control the anger that still simmered inside her. She hoped a brief workout would help her restore balance. There had to be more going on than just the treatment of the captain for her to lose her temper like this.
"Thank you, Commander," Evelyn said with a polite nod. "It'll take me a few hours to get adjusted, but I'll want to see everyone in the briefing lounge in a few hours. Let's go ahead and say around 1700 hours?"
Jayde nodded. "I will inform the senior staff."
Taking that first step onto the bridge of her new command, Evelyn looked around for a few moments before she started towards the commanding officer's ready room. She had a lot of work to get done before that meeting, and the last thing she wanted to to be unprepared.
