Mission: Ghost of a Chance
[CONTINUED]
[OLD]
The Venator class warbird fired again, another five bursts of crackling blue energy that struck the Hyperion, this time unchallenged by the cruiser's shields. The Hyperion's systems began to loose power, mostly the ship's weapons and engine systems. On the bridge, John frowned at his suddenly unresponsive ship. Life support was still working, as well the comms. "Jayde, send a wide broadcast distress signal across all channels," he said.
[NEW]
"Engineering to bridge" Wendi's panicked voice came over the bridge speakers. "We have power failing all over the ship. Whatever hit us has caused havoc across all of our power systems" she reported. "I'm sorry captain but we've got no computer control down here, and its going to take us hours to get back into the ships systems. We've also lost our engines and the weapons array is completely offline" she told him.
Jayde sent the distress signal, targeting it to any Romulans in the area. This ship was either rogue, or had no idea that they were here with permission. Either way, she was not going to give up without a fight.
At the same time, she beamed Sevena onto the bridge. They would need the Romulan's help dealing with this ship.
Sevena blinked her eyes and looked around her. She had been in the process of ordering food from a replicator when the transporter had kidnapped her, and as she looked around the bridge her confusion grew. Why was she on the bridge?
Ael'isha smiled as her ship circled the disabled Starfleet ship. It had almost been too easy, but she wasn't about to complain too much. "Hail them," she ordered.
"Incoming communication from the Romulan ship," Iona said.
"On screen," John said. He clenched his fist on the armrest of the command chair as the view screen came to life with the image of a young Romulan woman with long black hair. Instead of a Romulan military uniform, she wore a black leather vest.
"Starfleet vessel, I am Ael'isha T'vek, commander of the warbird Vistian. You are disabled, and while I'm sure that you're perfectly capable of putting up a fight, I am going to warn you now. Any resistance given to my people when they board your ship will result in the instant death of thirty members of your crew. You have ten seconds to respond."
Over my dead body, Jayde thought. She turned to Sevena and mouthed, "Help us."
"T'vek?!" Sevena gasped. Quickly, she took a step so that she was hiding behind Commander Jayde. Turning towards the officer, she couldn't help but show both her surprise and the fact that she was more than a little worried. "What have you Starfleet barbarians poked with a stick and stirred up this time?" she asked as she started tugging off her Galae uniform jacket.
"We are surveying an asteroid field," Jayde said. "Who is she?"
"I'll need to check my records to truly identify her, but if she's a member of House T'vek, then she's an outcast. And I don't need to be identified as a current member of the Romulan military," Sevena answered and she shrugged her jacket off and looked around for somewhere to stash it.
'You can recycle the jacket in the replicator. There will no trace of it on the ship if you do. Or hide it in the air filtration system."
Sevena nodded and hurried over to the bridge replicator. Stuffing her tunic into the receptacle, she breathed a worried sigh of relief.
John waved his hand, indicating a response channel to be opened. "Commander T'vek. I'm Captain John Theisman, captain of the Federation starship Hyperion. I demand an explanation for the attack on my ship."
"You are in no position to make demands, Captain. You have two choices, surrender, or die," Ael'isha replied coldly.
John turned and looked around his bridge, at each person, recalling their names and how many family members they had on board if any. Silently, he also recalled the number of crew and civilians on board. Gravely, he returned his attention to the view screen and nodded slowly. "We surrender," he said.
"A wise choice, Captain. My forces will begin beaming to your ship in two minutes. Prepare to surrender your command codes when they arrive," Ael'isha said. With that, the screen blacked out as the channel was ended.
"What?!" Smoak said softly, surprised, as he looked over to John than toward Jayde. He clenched his fists slightly. "We should fire. We should fight back. We should do something instead of just let them take us without a fight."
"And how do you propose we fight back, Commander?" John asked. "We've got power fluctuations all over the ship, no propulsion or shields, weapons can't be trusted not to power down right when we need to fire. That's a Venator class warbird, the only thing we could do is hope to out run her and we can't even dodge a fluffy cloud."
"We don't need that much power to fire a torpedo. We can detonate it remotely. It's better than giving up without a fight." Jason replied.
"There's no guarantee for a total victory, Commander. I appreciate your determination to your duty as senior tactical officer, but we don't just have Starfleet personnel on this ship. There are civilians, families, children, on board, and I'm not going to risk sacrificing them just for the chance to launch what could very well be a hopeless strike at a superior force. They'll win this round, we need to think about the long term fight. Trust me, I'm not giving up without a fight, but there are more ways to defeating your enemies than phasering them out of the sky,"John said.
Jason rolled his eyes slightly. He was well aware there was more than one way, his entire career and skill set proved it, but the reason there were more than just officers on board was all the more reason to put up a fight. If they wanted this ship they wouldn't destroy it, so they weren't in danger of being killed by weapons fire. They would have to board and that's where things would be more in their favor. He understood the Captain's orders, but he didn't like the idea of surrendering.
