Mission:
Ghost of a Chance
Location: USS Hyperion
Previously on the USS Hyperion:
"I see," John said with a carefully guarded tone. He decided to let it be. If Jayde wanted to talk about it, then he trusted her to do so. "Well, as long as he behaves, then we'll call it a trade off for loosing Divaro and all of our officers in engineering. Was there anything else that I should know about that happened out there?"
"Nothing that was not taken care of at the time. I will send you my report." Jayde glanced at Val. "She may have additional information for you." She paused. "For the record, I have nothing against Commander Smoak as an officer."
Élan raised her eyebrows and almost gave a feral-like smile. She had quite a bit to say, but she was wanting to be somewhat professional about it and not go off in the middle of the corridor. Instead, the Trill nodded her head and bite her bottom lip in order to keep quiet for the moment.
Conclusion:
John hid a frown as he watched both Jayde and Val carefully. He knew that there was more than what either of the women were letting on to the story, but he wasn't about to press them. If Jayde said she could work with Smoak, then he would trust her word, but there was the nagging sensation that they knew each other and it wasn't all on good terms. The same could be said of Val and what she had to say about the away mission. There was something in her expression that made him pause, and worry. "Alright. I'm considering having the Helios conduct a survey of the asteroid field along with the Hyperion. Naturally, we'd cover more ground if we use both ships, so I thought about the Hyperion charting along one edge of the field and the Helios going in the opposite direction. Both ships could meet up on the other side and we could update the charts before we move on. I'd like to get your thoughts and suggestions," he finally said.
Jayde nodded. "How do you propose dividing the crew between the two ships?"
"I was planning on leaving that up to you and Lieutenant Val," John answered. "I was considering Lieutenant Val and perhaps that small warrant officer in stellar cartography for the Helios for starters."
Jayde looked to Élan. "What do you think?" she asked.
Élan nodded and did her best to contain a smile. "I think that Kaiyo and I could handle the Helios without difficulty. I'd request at least one person from medical and security just in case as well. I'd like to request that we use a few probes to help us chart the field as well. It'll take less time and if we use the Type Eight or Nine probes we could recover them for reuse."
"I believe Liang would be a good choice from security," Jayde said. "However, there is a new head of that department on board. You might wish to consult him." She glanced at the door to security, then back to Élan. "Probes are an excellent idea."
John nodded as he watched Jayde carefully. There was definitely a history there between her and Smoak. He decided to let it go for now. "Alright. So, Val and Kaiyo will lead the Helios team. I'll request Liang and get Velah as well. It never hurts to have medical along as well. I want the Helios prepped for launch by 0900 tomorrow. Lieutenant, will that be long enough to get five class VIII probes ready?"
"Thank you, Commander," Élan said softly as she inclined her head. Turning towards the captain, the Trill officer nodded as she thought over his question. "We should be able to configure that many probes for an extended survey mission quickly enough. I'll get my best technicians on it right away. Are you going to make the away team just the four of us or were you going to add any more crew?"
"I'm going to leave the exact size of the team up to you and Commander Jayde. If the two of you can brain storm the details and get a report to me in about an hour, I'll get the other details in order," John said.
Jayde knew that sending Liang would mean she would be working with Jason, but right now, she was more concerned with helping Val get the team she would be most comfortable working with.
"Personally, I'd like to keep the away team small, but I'll defer to the Commander's judgement," Élan said with a slight nod towards the executive officer. The Helios could handle up to twenty people for an extended time, but the runabout was small and more people would end up getting in the way. A small crew would be much more comfortable, and a less likely chance for any conflicts of personality. Naturally, the Trill was all for stunning any trouble-makers this time around. "I'd like to avoid some of the excitement we had on our last away mission if possible."
Jason walked out of his office, PADDs in hand, and looked around the office for a moment. He than proceeded out of the Security Offices to the corridor. He took another moment to get his barrings before walking. As he walked, he found the small group of and approached, clearing his throat slightly. "Captain. Commander." He said softly, not making eye contact right away with Jayde before handing over one of the PADDs. "Captain, I have my tactical and security rundown for you." Jason than handed the second PADD to the Captain. "As well as three officers I would like transferred over to the Hyperion. They are great officers and I've worked with them before, but you and the Commander are welcomed to vet them yourselves."
"That was fast," John commented as he took the padds. "Commander Jayde and I will get together in the morning and go over the officers records to see if we can get the transfers approved by fleet command. in the meantime, I have a request for chief petty officer Liang Shao ready to depart tomorrow morning at 0900 for an away mission on the Helios. Think you can spare her for a few days?"
Jason nodded his head and replied. "Sure. I'll make arrangements to have someone cover her duties till she returns. Is she the only one you need?"
"That would be a question better suited to be asked of Commander Jayde and Lieutenant Val," John said, nodding his head towards the two women.
"If that's all Lieutenant Val needs, then yes, just Liang," Jayde said.
"I'm fairly certain that we won't need anyone else other than the officers we've already mentioned," Élan said. "After all, this is a simple charting mission and we won't be going all that far from the Hyperion."
"Never assume something is as simple as it seems. Just because its supposed to be quick and easy doesn't mean it will, Lieutenant." Jason added with a bit of a smile. "Year's of experience has taught me that much, but if you think one will do, than you got it."
Élan felt a small, slightly amused and somewhat wry smile spreading across her face as she gave the security officer a look that was mixed with amusement and perhaps just a little bit of smugness. Thanks to Val, she had lifetimes of experience and knowledge, although she had to admit that Val was young and Élan was only Val's fourth host. Val was still somewhat reckless at times, and Élan often gave in to similar impulses, but both were still amused by the other officer's statement. She finally allowed a small chuckle and nodded.
Jayde nodded to Val and then turned to Smoak and Theisman. "I'll stay here and do whatever you need me to."
"I'm sure it will end up working the other way around, Commander." Jason replied with a slight smirk.
"I'm going to want you to handle science while Lieutenant Val is away," John said after thinking for a moment.
Jayde nodded. "Yes, sir." It sounded like something she would enjoy. She glanced briefly at Jason. It also reminded her of her time in the Maquis.
Jason caught the glance from Jayde and knew it wasn't any good. He looked away quickly and cleared his throat before addressing the others. "I'll go take care of Liang's schedule. Get back to me when you can about those officers, Captain." He turned and walked off, avoiding a second look at Jayde if he could.
"If there is nothing else, sir, I would like to write up my report," Jayde said.
"I look forward to reading it," John said, keeping his voice casual. He knew that he was curious about Jayde and Smoak's past and it showed, just as he was sure that some things that had happened on the asteroid mission might not make it to the final report. As always, the Hyperion was keeping along with tradition of being a really interesting ship, full of equally interesting people. "I'll see you in the morning and we can discuss the officers Smoak requested and go over the final mission report before the Helios launches. Say, 0730?"
Jayde bowed to Theisman. "That will be fine. See you later."
Then she bowed to Val. "Good luck, lieutenant."
"Thank you, Commander. I wish the same to you as well," Élan said as she returned the bow. In truth, she suspected that Commander Jayde would have much rather preferred to join the Helios team rather than stay, but she didn't want to intrude. "I'll inform my staff that you'll be in charge while I'm away," she added before she turned and headed off back towards her office.
Jayde glanced at the door to security, then headed to her quarters to write up her report.
John glanced at the backs of the departing women then turned his he'd to glance towards the door to security. Finally, he shook his head and walked off towards a turbo lift in another direction. He had some digging to do it seemed.
