Élan rubbed her eyes and was thinking seriously about trying a cup of coffee in order to get herself started. She hadn’t been able to sleep after returning to the Hyperion following the fiasco at the diplomatic dinner on Romulus, and she had spent the majority of the night in the gym or in the science labs. As chief science officer, she wanted to ensure that everything within her department ran smoothly during the Hyperion’s long standing voyage, and since science was the largest department on the ship it was sometimes a little overwhelming. Fortunately, she had Val’s experience to draw from, and there was one solution that was fortunately easy to make.
“Val to Warrant Officer Kaiyo, please meet me in the Stellar Cartography Lab as soon as possible,” Élan said as she started towards stellar cartography.
Kaiyo arrived shortly after the call. "You called?" she asked simply.
Élan raised an eyebrow as she regarded the Warrant Officer. She still didn’t know much about Kaiyo outside of the tiny alien’s official file, but hopefully that would eventually change. “Yes, I understand that you’re scientific specialty is astronomical sciences. Since I can’t oversee stellar cartography due to my other duties, I’m appointing you to be in charge of the stellar cartography and astronomy labs. Unless you have any objections, you’re appointment will be effective immediately.”
Kaiyo nodded. "That was my assignment" she said simply with a small smile. "I will endeavour to do my best at Commanding both Labatories" she explained. "I may need tutoring... wait.... guidance?" she asked.
“Part of my job is to offer guidance, and I offer my assistance to everyone in the science department,” Élan said with a smile. “So what do you need guidance in?”
"Well...." Kaiyo said. "I may require a step stool to reach the higher consoles..."
“I’ll get with engineering and see if we can get something installed that will make it easier for you to reach the consoles. We’ll need several in Stellar Cartography most likely,” Élan said with a nod.
Kaiyo nodded. "I thankyou" she said. "Also. What style of deep space sensors does this vessel have on board?" she asked.
“Well, the Hyperion has a number of sensor systems, a majority of which are the standard lateral sensor pallets, which are multi-purpose and have the capability of scanning multiple ranges. If needed, we can also re-calibrate them for special purposes. We also have the high powered sensor platforms which can get an extra bit of data, but the Hyperion also has a series of specialized sensors as well. For long range, we have what we call the Longbow array, which can easily scan over twenty light years away with clear detail. The sensor control room in the pod has direct control to the readouts from that array, but we can access the data from here as well,” Élan replied. After a moment, she nodded thoughtfully.
“I take it that you’re interested mostly in deep space exploration?” Élan asked.
Kaiyo nodded. "I do endeavour to acquire knowledge about the universe" she explained with a cheeky smile. "I like the sensors, they are far more advanced than ours currently"
Élan smiled in understanding. “Well, the Hyperion’s sensors are among the most advanced in the entire Starfleet. The Luna class has some of the best toys for us science officers to play with. If your planet has joined the Federation, I’m sure that the sensor technology will be openly shared with your people,” she said.
Kaiyo nodded again. "We look forward to the sharing of Technology" she explained. "The Engineer which provided us with a Starfleet Communications Array compared our technology to...." she paused for a few seconds "A Class of Starship... A Constution Class?" she asked looking rather confused.
“The Constitution class star-ships were one of the Federation’s first ship classes that were placed in service. The last of the original Type II series of the class were decommissioned about one hundred and twenty five years ago if I remember correctly. Compared to the Hyperion, they would be considered pretty basic, almost primitive, by some standards of technology levels. Not that it’s a bad thing. It means that your planet is on the right path for galactic exploration. With the technology sharing program, the Federation can help you close the gap. I wouldn’t be surprised if your people were building star-ships that can match the Hyperion within five to ten years,” Élan said with a smile.
Kaiyo smiled. "We do have hopes for such achievements to be made" she explained. "It is one reason we joined in unison with the Federation" she added.
“I’m fairly certain that your people will get there. Who knows, maybe Starfleet will want to build a shipyard or scientific facility near your home-world,” Élan said. Glancing at the time, she smiled. "I have a meeting in a few minutes, but if there's anything you need please let me know." With a formal yet friendly nod, Élan turned and headed out of stellar cartography.
