Velah had checked upon the transfer of the things for the quarters; the list of crates and bags they had registered for this took a bout half an hour to verify between hers and Sassi's things. They were packed for a long haul, not going to be back at Earth for a long while. Luckily Velah's mother had visit about a month ago, and spent two weeks babysitting and helping get things packed. All the connections to Earth had their time with Sassi; Velah just hated she could not get to Earth in time to have Grandmama see Sassi.
A quick shower and proper scenting of oils and bathing per tradition to help off set any of her Orion Heritage fromleaking despite the 'Inoculations' she took to suppress her nature as well. She took the skirted uniform option she favored and teh black stockings, the calf high boots were regulation color and dimension but not that replicated garbage but dyed Deer Leather with a supple feel to them and good for hours upon hours of wearing. Not unlike the moccasins of the Native Americans these boots not only looked good they felt it. A pair of simple silver stud ear rings with black opals were all the jewelry she wore. She had a simple mechanical watch; the old school doctor she had studied unde swore by doing things the old way just to make sure Velah had the basics.
She had her PADD with her orders by the door and she scooped them up on her way out. Along the corridors she went over her plans; she had two days while Sassi visit her father, it would be best if Velah not hinder the visits to her father, she could even be a little lax for a bit on the visitation schedule that HIS lawyer came up with. Velah knew she had to let off a little but she refused to just hand their daughter over to a man who ... well it would have to be hammered out later.
Walking across the Bridge; she did not want to really see this much as the Chief Medical Officer that meant her medical advice was needed and often injuries were the reasoning so for having a healthy crew Velah could hold down her trips to the bridge. She had the natural walk and sway reminiscent of models on a runway; it had been ingrained in her mind and trained to her since she could walk to a point it is natural for her.
She touched the chime at the time of her appointment and waited for permission to enter.
The Hyperion had arrived at 171 and begun a full transfer of personnel and supplies almost immediately. The speed that both the Hyperion crew and the station crew had started the transfer had been surprising, but then again John had been promised that the Hyperion's layover would be short. For John, he had been held up in his office since the ship's arrival, overseeing documentation and taking calls. He had just finished the last required conference call and was thinking about taking a quick break when the door chime rang out. "Enter," he said, wondering who it might be. Running through a list of possible items that he might have overlooked, he drew a blank and leaned back in his chair to wait. Seeing an Orion female walk into his office, John blinked. He had almost forgotten about his new CMO. Standing, he walked around his desk and smiled. "Commander Velah?" he asked.
"Captain it is a pleasure." Gave him a smile. "Thank you for accepting my application so quickly; I am back into space again. I hope you will give a lady a chance to get her space legs back?" SHe hoped he had a sense of humor and offered the PADD. "Officially here are the orders and the request for my and Daneil's Daughter to be allowed aboard as well Sir." SHe kept that twinkle in her eye that only Orion females can; phermones or not her nature came out even if she realized it. Sassi is so looking forward since most of her life was stationary she really is looking forward to some space time."
"Commander Velah, it's a pleasure to have you on board," John said as he waved her to sit down. "I understand it's been some time since you've been on a star ship. You'll have a couple of weeks to settle in before things start to get interesting. Did they have time to fill you in on where the Hyperion is heading?"
"About all I really know is Romulan Territory and a very long patrol away from Federation Space." SHe said calmly. "I thought that was another reason you could use a good doctor, I am very versed in Xeno-biology over the past years on 171 and I used to score hogh marks in Xeno Biology." She smiled. "I know the misson is 5 or 7 years so I volunteered." She kept her fingers laced and properly in her lap. "My transfer was rushed so I admit I kind of leapt before I looked."
John nodded as he sat back down. "Our primary mission is to explore the Beta Quadrant, with a direct focus on exploring the Beta Quadrant sectors claimed by the Romulan Empire. Unfortunately, the majority of their claimed regions aren't even fully explored by the Romulans themselves. The Federation recently signed a treaty with the Empire that allows us to have nearly unlimited access. The mission duration is at least seven years minimum. Fortunately, we have been allowed to grab the best science officers and xeno specialists we can, but you're the best trained in medical. Which was a blessing when I was told of your transfer request," he said.
"I am here to help you and the crew." Velah nod. "And so long as this small family needs someone to patch them up you will have me to do the job." She smiled. "Is there anything you want to ask me Sir?"
"There is one small thing," John said with some hesitation. "Divaro."
"He is not a small thing Captain." Velah said. "I remember he is tall and if not changed since I saw him when he collected our daughter I would say that he is more interested in his daughter than ... me. It was at the Security Check Point and no reports of even a cross word." She smiled. "From what I have heard from his Grandmother; who still likes me, he has moved on." She gave him the calm smile. "There is a reason they are called ex-husbands."
John nodded carefully as he tried to figure out how to proceed. It didn't sound like there would be any problems, and in fact he really didn't want to get involved in a personal matter if it didn't affect the crew. He finally decided to just leave it be. "Well, it sounds as if you two have it figured out then, and I won't pry or get involved," he said.
"You would have more problems if we were living together again I assure you." She smiled in a sly way. "And since that is not going to happen it will not be worst than some of the inter crew relationship break ups seen on every star ship. People come together and sometimes they ..." She shrugged. "grow apart after having a Lovely girl between them." She winked. "I took a Hypocratic Oath to do not harm; that inclues Daniel by the way." She snickered. "And feel free to ask questions Captain, consider it Doctor Patient confidentuality?" She gave a cat like grin and waited.
"I'll pass for now," John said with a smile that matched hers. "Feel free to take some time to settle in if you want. Lieutenant Sato has been looking after sickbay this long, another day won't matter. She's more or less your de facto assistant unless you want to appoint someone else. Your department, as long as it runs I try not to get involved."
"There is an OR nurse that has worked with me for years that I trust to know my needs and a Triage Nurse that requested to come with me, aside from that I do not want to be invasive." She nod with a grin. "If she has run it thus far she is worth getting to know and keeping. She knows the crew and I do not really like to step on toes. Thanks for the confidence, I will not let you down." She started toewards the door controlling the natural sway of her hips; sometimes she had to reel the Slave Girl back a tad bit. "I hope we can see each other more socially as I would hate it to only be for physicals, and you might want to meet the reason I came, Sassi really is a good girl, you would like her. The crew are family Sir; I take extra good care of family." She said before she departed.
John nodded thoughtfully as he watched Velah leave his ready room. As the doors slid closed behind his new chief medical officer, he found that he was tapping his stylus against the surface of the desk top and he had to make his hand stop. Rubbing his chin thoughtfully, he decided to try to make an effort to get to know all of his senior officers better. Besides, it would even possibly help the overall crew morale, which would always a good thing. Grabbing the next padd on his desk, he filed a mental note away to see to that once the Hyperion was underway once more.
