Mission:
Pathways
Location: Captain's Ready Room
ON
Normally, Jayde would report for duty before actually taking her position on the bridge, but the ship did not wait long enough at the Starbase for her to unpack and settle in before she had to be on duty for departure.
So, the first chance she got, she went to the Captain's Ready Room to report in -- officially.
Once the Hyperion was at warp, John had retreated back to his ready room. It seemed to be the norm for captains, sit in the command chair, give a few orders, run to the ready room and sit there for a whole day. It was sometimes a perk of the job, and other times it was a royal pain. Hearing the door chime, he looked up from the padd he was reading and called "Enter" before he returned to his reading.
Jayde walked in and stopped in front of his desk. She gave him a slight bow. "Mira Jayde, reporting in -- officially."
John set the padd he had been reading down and stodd. "At ease, Commander," he said with a formal nod of his head. "Please, have a seat."
The security officer nodded and quietly sat down.
"I understand that you only recently came on board before we left Earth, I hope you were given enough time to settle in. Were you briefed on the Hyperion's mission?" he asked.
"I have settled in, but I was not briefed on the mission," she said.
John managed not to shake his head. He was no longer surprised that none of the Hyperion's crew knew of their mission or mandate. From what he could tell, people had literally been snatched off of whatever they had been doing before and booted over to his ship without even so much as a warning. When in a hurry, that could happen but it was supposed to be a rare thing. "Well, the Hyperion has been assigned to explore the Beta Quadrant, and the Federation just signed a treaty with the Romulan Empire that grants us full access to their territory. Our current mandate is a seven year exploration mission to Romulan space, the majority of which is unexplored even by the Romulans. We're heading to Romulus to pick up a current star chart and our liaison officer, after that we'll be more or less on our own," he said.
Jayde nodded. "It will be interesting to see what lies in the Beta Quadrant." She paused for a moment. "Will we be allowed to leave communication relay stations as we go so that we may maintain contact with the Federation?"
"We'll be patched into the Romulan's communications network while we're within their borders, but once we leave their territory we'll be able to deploy relay stations. Most of what we have are the limited use satallites, though. They're usable, but the downside is that they're easily destroyed," john answered.
"Then I request permission to work with Intel and Operations to update the security with our comm systems," she said. "While I appreciate the Romulans' permission to explore their territory, I do not trust the Tal'Shiar to stay out of our business."
"Well, that's always going to be an issue, so I'll go ahead and let you in on something you as chief of security may not like," John said. "As a part of the treaty agreement, the Tal'Shiar will be assigning a liason officer to the Hyperion for the duration of our exploration mission to the Beta Quadrant, or at least until we're done poking around the part claimed by the Romulans," John said, mentally cringing as he prepared for an outburst. Most of the other people who knew that little detail usually had some form of protest to snap off with.
"Just one?" Jayde asked. As long as the Tal'Shiar was open about their intentions, she had no problem. It was only if they chose to spy on the crew covertly that she would raise concerns.
"Just one. I would like to ask if you can help keep an eye on them when they come on board. I don't want them to feel unwelcomed, but I do expect them to obey our rules," John said.
"Of course," Jayde replied calmly. "I believe we can come to an understanding."
"Excellent," John said with a smile. "I take it you've already gotten familiar with the tactical systems and your department senior staff?"
"To a degree, yes. There is still more to learn, but that will come," she assured him.
"Good," John said. "You'll have plenty of time to learn between here and Romulus, and I'm hoping that we stay out of the path of danger for a while. But, unfortunately, space is dangerous and full of surprises, so I want security to be ready at all times."
"That is my wish as well," Jayde said. "Is there anything else you wish of me or my department?"
"That's all for now, but naturally that might change. When you think your department is up to your standards, we'll start running drills and see how things stand overall," John said.
Jayde nodded. "Very well. My Master-at-Arms will be ready to run weapons drill shortly."
"Excellent. I won't keep you from it then. Good hunting, Commander," John said with a smile.
She gave the Captain a half-bow and headed for security.
