It had been a whirlwind of a day; with Sassi's records for transfer; the work orders to be packed and shipped and trying to convince the staff she really was preparing to leave Velah was exhausted. Then there was the fact Joseph took it badly; probably another reputation of an Orion Female toying with a man, so it was going to be a few lonely days until the ship arrived and then the settling into the swing of things.
"Mom, are you sure you and Daddy will get along?" Sassi still needed convincing. "I mean you and he will be under the confines?" Sassi had a small bit of her father in her alright, her skin was closer to a human Greek decent in coloring and she molded really well in the human population without the stigma of her Orion roots coming out. "I get the feeling this is not going well?"
Velah patted the sofa next to her, the 1/8 th Betazoid in her seemed to only allow strong emotional impressions to Sassi; thankfully she did not have to endure having those voices, even muted as Daniel's were they could become annoying. Sassi got more focus with people she cared for so Velah had a pretty accurate Lie detector in her daughter from that stand point, it was always a tight rope balance raising a child that could sense your stronger moods.
""I am only going along because you need to see your father and rather than losing time in transit and me worrying about you it was a simple thing to just follow you and him. We did that before you were born." Velah mused at some flashes of fond memories. "Maybe I was sin a rut; too comfortable with having the Hospital and all that, not really getting to know my patents or the crew as much with a small city and the flow of people." She glanced into Sassi's eyes to give a good read. "You will find that the Orion Heritage is a social one; we like being near people and you have enough of your father in you not to be so driven by pheromones and the hot flashes that come with being fully Orion. " Velah had long ago described her sudden and almost uncontrollable heritage that if not sated does tend to build up as Hot flashes; okay so in human terms it was totally different, but for a child it was easier to understand. "So I will just try and stay as far from your father...." She brought her daughter in for a hug. "You know your father and I are never going to get together, he is too stubborn and I am too proud to admit defeat so you might as well just might as well get used to things changing in that case; your dad is a charmer, he will maybe be engaged by the time we arrive?" She mused. "He will have someone to keep him company at least so I doubt he will hardly notice I am there." It was a struggle but she managed to keep her trepidation about being that close to him again and the more negative urges from showing, Daniel had taught her how to hide things from an empath early in their dating.
"I just want to make sure you're okay with all of this, Mom..." Sassi said quietly. "And you bring up something I had planned to ask you about. What if we get there and dad is engaged to someone else? Or what if he's even re-married? Are you going to be okay with that? I mean, you and dad were married for eleven years. Are you sure you won't be jealous if there's someone new in his life?"
"I got you out of that eleven years." Velah squeezed. "Trust me I need very little more than that and nothing else from that man." She giggled a bit. "Don't count me out; you know I could find someone if I really put my mind to it." She winked. "Your mom has a few tricks she can use to get a man's interests, just not going to be your dad. I suspect he will have someone, if not in the relationship it will be progressing that way. He can be charming once in a while."
"There must have been something about him that you liked, mom..." Sassi said. "After all you married him. What was it that you liked about him? I haven't seen dad in a long time and I want to know all about him."
"He can be charming and kind when he wants to." Velah said, not bringing up his stubborn nature and the fact he was charming to get what he wanted. "I liked that when we were together I was not just an Orion, I was myself and I happened to be an Orion." She explained. "You have heard how other people talk and gossip; your Dad would rather see for himself than listen to rumors."
"Gossip about what, mom?" she asked. "And what's wrong with being an Orion. I'm part Orion, right? And no one has ever said anything to me about it." Sassi looked a bit confused, not fully understanding what her mother was getting at.
"Adults are not as comfortable with people who are different; because green is not as common as you and your father's coloring I sometimes get looked down upon because I am different it sometimes gets me in trouble." She told. "Plus I was a little wild growing up on Earth, I really stood out among humans and got a few people picking on me so I suppose you might say I am thankful you do not have to go through it." She winked. "Your father saw past that of course and that was a reason I married him... eventually."
"I see..." Sassi answered, although truth be told she wasn't really sure if she understood it all. But she decided for the moment to let the subject go and concentrate on something else. "So what does dad do on this ship we're going to? Is he like the captain or something?"
"I was married to him for eleven years, being the Engineering Chief will swell his head enough, I would not go if he were in command." She laughed. "One of us would pull rank if he were Captain or I out ranked him. He is the Chief Engineer on the ship; in other words a mechanic that keeps the ship working..." She laughed. "I used to call him that and he called me the 'Sawbones' after the doctors on old sailing ships.
"That's funny mom..." Sassi said. "I wish dad could have been around when I was younger more than he was. I remember some of the things we used to do after we came here to 171 when I was little," she said as she thought back. "I remember him taking me to the arboretum to play sometimes and I remember him taking me to engineering. I used to sit in his office and watch all the lights on the panels."
Knowing your father you will be doing that a whole lot more and this time he will probably try and get you to learn what it all means." Velah winked. "He loves to talk about his engines; most Engineers do that, so you might get used to it, your Dad will want to share his world with you; another endearing quality he has; but take it from me, tell him 'Dad... boring...' if you need. He does have a tendency to get wrapped up in what he is doing."
"Oh, you mean like you do sometimes with sickbay and medicine..." Sassi said with a laugh. "You do that sometimes too--so did you get it from dad or did he get it from you?"
"Something we had in common." Velah said. "It is also a reason we got on so well; very comfortable in what we did with one another. I never really minded that he obsessed and he forgave me to a degree.
"So how long will it be until dad's ship gets here?" she asked. "Will I have time to tell all of my friends goodbye?"
"I am arranging a small party before you leave and you can invite your friends followed by a last sleep over." Velah smiled. "Who needs Latinum on a star ship?" She laughed.
"Thanks mom..." she said, giving her mom a big hug. "So what will there be to do on a starship? And will there be other kids my age there?"
Not as many as here." Velah said honestly so you will not be able to get away with as much with a smaller class size. You might really have to study as the instructors will be more readily available." She teased. "And on a star ship it is like a smaller station with more people to show you the varied things of the stars. The chance to mingle with a broader demographic and learn from them."
"And less chance that I will be able to sneak off and go see what dad is doing in engineering if I get bored in class, I'll bet." Sassi grinned at her mom. "You know, like I used to do when I would come see you in sickbay?"
"I hear the school accepts doctor's notes for absences." Velah chatted. "I might be willing to do so for your father..." She rolled her eyes. "Once in a while mind you, not as a steady habit to either of us understand?" She glanced at the chronometer. "You ready for some dinner with this conversation. Velah got up off the couch. "Your choice tonight my darling?"
"How about cheeseburgers and fries," Sassi answered quickly. "With a large, really thick strawberry shake?"
"I am so glad you inherited a sweet tooth." Velah head to the replicator. "I think I had one mutate while I was on Earth growing up but I am going to get Chocolate if you don't mind?" She started ordering the food. "You get the silverware ready and set the table."
"Silverware for a cheeseburger and fries? Really mom...?" Sassi shook her head. Sometimes her mom could be so formal. "This is finger food."
"I like the fork for my fries." Velah raised an eyebrow. "So do not look at me in that tone of voice." She smiled and winked.
