Velah was trying not to shake; she had to cover it with a strong emotion and crying is not the one she had in mind. Years of hard dedication to steadily climb her way to a prestige position of Chief Medical Officer of a Star Base all shot to hell now that her Ex-husband decides to become a jerk. He could not just handle the status quo; granted Sassi is well worth all the effort on both sides, but still why had Velah had to do this... she knew why?
With the Brisk step that her staff had come to know is Velah in a bad mood they concentrated on their work while'The Boss is in a mood' and she had a clear path to her office. Going inside she immediately plopped into her desk chair... would it be a crime to request 'this' chair go with her as a reminder of better times?
"Computer, please request Doctor Dorthy Jenkins come to my office." Velah knew her Deputy Chief Medical Officer was the next shift, she would be up and around, and would want the news Velah had from her if the rumor mill had not gotten to her first?
The computer acknowledged her.
Velah sat just looking ahead; contemplating the moves left ahead of her, trying not to focus upon the past. She loved this Station without a doubt but she also loved her daughter more so it really was not a choice just an uncomfortable one to say the least. She decided she would not cry at the loss of a dream; of her hard work and the friends that she had met... damn, Joseph. There was a complication, she would have to let him know it will never be. They were just in the early stages and from painful experience that brought her to this point, she knew a long distance relationship would end up in the Thomas Crapper in a heart ripping process. Joseph was still a new romance; no deep plans as she had not even brought him around Sassi. Some dates and good sex but nothing more than that right now. She hated he might think she is just being 'an Orion Girl' and did not care as much as she did or that it was not a fun choice for Velah. Still that is the breaks and family always come first.
Dorthy Jenkins grumbled as the request to report to the chief medical officer’s office interrupted her breakfast. She knew it would be important, but this was her special once a week breakfast and she was hesitant to simply leave it unfinished. Besides, the owner of the restaurant might get upset if she did. The Betazoid chef who had set up this small eatery was well known for his ego as a chef, and he was easily offended. ‘Much like a French chef,’ she thought as she wolfed down the rest of her food and stood. Showing the chef her empty plate, she smiled and hurried towards the infirmary. One of these days, she was going to understand why Starfleet loved to throw monkey wrenches into people’s plans. Arriving at the medical section, Dorthy headed straight to Velah’s office. Without knocking, she stepped inside and sat down.
Velah looked up at Dorthy. "I am sorry for the short notice and I know it is sudden... " She noted the body language of the ACMO. "The Hospital is yours Dorthy." Velah just said. "I have recommended to Fleet and the Chain of Command that you succeed me when I leave." It was best when a person is irritated to get the 'news;' over with. "I am transferring so I leave the station to you, it will be about a week for it to all come through the channels and all but I thought I would tell you before the Grapevine and rumors, You are the first to know it is coming as far as medical goes."
“Wait. What?” Dorthy said, shaking her head. “Are you serious? Gee, I was just aggravated because you know I love my Tuesday morning breakfast. Why are you transferring?”
"Sassi and I are going to be on the USS Hyperion." Velah explained. "There was an oppurtunity that I had to jump upon so I did not have a whole lot of time to get my transfer." She smiled in a polite manner. "It was not something that I can talk about but I thought I would put in a good word for you to take over after I am gone." She explained.
“Well, I appreciate it Velah. I really do. I just hoped that I could learn more from you before something like this happened. I’m going to miss you, we all are,” Dorthy said.
Velah's expression softened a bit more as she gave a grin. "I thought I had more time to teach you the tricks of the trade." She mused. "Too bad that things got a little out of hand and plans always change." She leaned forward. "You have what you need I do not really have to teach you much?" She raised an eyebrow. "Just don't go telling it was a case of the student surpassing the Master?"
“I won’t,” Dorthy promised. She was still somewhat surprised by all of this, which was understandable since Velah had been on the station for quite a long time. It was going to be odd without her around.
"I will be watching as I am told this is the base of operations for the Hyperion; not that I am on the ship yet but what I can get from varied sources I will be coming around periodically." Velah smiled. "Hope to see my desk occupied by you, but the chair goes with me. You can requisition your own." She snickered. "This one I have trained too long to let it go, perk of being the outgoing boss."
“I never liked your chair anyway, but I’m glad I’ll get to see you from time to time,” Dorthy said.
"I think you will do great." Velah smiled. "But I will be holding this office as long as i can mind you." SHe winked. "When the USS Hyperion docks I will bid you farewell, until then make sure to ask what you want to know before i leave?"
“I’ll be sure to do that, and believe me, I’ll have a lot of questions. But for now, I need to go have a nervous breakdown,” Dorthy said with a smile as she stood.
"I did invest in a certain antacid for the first month or so of taking command of 171's Sick Bay." Velah laughed. "Go take care of yourself and I will talk to you when you come on shift."
“Yes, Ma’am,” Dorthy said before she offered an informal salute and headed out of the office. She decided that the first thing she was going to do was go find not only some antacids, but really good strong liquor as well.
Velah sat back in her chair and sigh, now it felt like it is really happening now, she had just taken the leap off the bridge and hoped the Hyperion was a safety net?
