Mission: Pathways

"Why me? Commander Grey is the chief science officer. Shouldn't she go first so that she can set an example for me," Élan asked, not able to help but be a bit sarcastic.

Eva sighed and folded her arms across her chest. She could understand and tell that there was definitely something between these two, but even her patience had its limits and she was not in the mood to put up with either of the junior lieutenants or their issues first thing in the morning. "Lieutenant Élan Val, go with the doctor and stop being difficult or you'll be on double shifts for the next two weeks," Eva snapped. Before her subordinate could even start to form a protest in her mind, Eva cut her off. "That's a direct order and it's not open for discussion."

Élan would sometimes push the boundaries when she thought she could get away with it, but in this instance she could tell that Commander Grey had clearly reached her limit. Setting her jaw, the Trill simply nodded and stepped into the exam room.

"Good. Now, strip down to your underwear and hop up onto the table," Miko said as she pulled the curtain closed behind her and set the folders and Padds down on the table.

"Well, that's going to be a problem. I'm not wearing anything underneath my uniform," Élan said.

"Oh, well, that's no problem. Just take your uniform off and sit down on the table as comfortably as you can," Miko said as she opened the folder with Élan's record and glanced at the chart.

"You want me to get completely naked and be totally comfortable with you standing there," Élan said, not bothering to hide the false sarcasm in her voice.

"Lieutenant, other than a very few physical differences that include the visible Trill markings and the surgical scar where your symbiont was inserted, our two species are identical on the outside in just about every way and there's nothing there that I haven't seen before. Now strip," Miko snapped.

"Fine, no need to get bitchy," Élan said as she removed her uniform jacket, shirt, and skirt. Totally nude, she sat down on the exam room table. She could feel Val's dislike for not only the situation but the medical officer as well.

"Thank you," Miko said as she removed the stethoscope from around her neck. Most medical officers preferred to use the computer readouts, but Miko was a traditionalist and besides, it was good to stick to the basics. She hid an evil grin as she placed the freezing cold end of the stethoscope against Élan's bare skin.

"Oh sweet Holy Divines that's cold!" Élan screamed as the freezing cold metal touched her skin. She was already uncomfortable in the cool air of sickbay, with the goose bumps to prove it, and now this evil bitch was holding freezing cold metal against her skin! Inside her, Val squirmed, making Élan's insides feel as if the symbiont was trying out for the gymnastics team. Altogether, the exam was making her uncomfortable and more than a little upset.

"Get it off! Get it off of me you evil bitch!" Élan screamed.

"Oh, just shut up and hold still, you're making me loose count," Miko snapped as she held the stethoscope end in place. She managed to barely hide a satisfied grin at the science officer's reaction.

Standing outside the examination room, Eva frowned at the sudden burst of screaming from the science officer and the verbal snapping between the two women inside that followed. Even though she couldn't see what was going on, she could hear everything that was being said and she could guess what had happened. Even though she felt a shiver run up her spine at the fact that she was next on the doctor's list of people to torture, she did allow a small grin at the fact that it was, for the moment, quite entertaining.

Miko finally finished listening to Élan's blood pressure, pulse, heartbeat, and even Val's squirming around and stepped back to write a few notes in the science officer's medical file. Once she was done with that, she looked up and pulled a medical tricorder out of her pocket. Opening the device, she took a full detailed scan of the science officer and studied the readouts before she nodded and tapped a command that would save the scan onto one of the Padds.

"Alright, you can put your clothes back on. I'm sure you'll be happy to know that both you and your symbiont are in good health. I'll expect you to return in four months for your next exam," Miko said.

Élan glared hatefully towards the medical officer before she finally pulled her uniform back on and stormed out of the exam room. Without bothering to offer any exchange with Commander Grey, she stormed out of sickbay and back to her quarters for a hot shower.

Eva raised her eyebrows as she watched Lieutenant Val storm out of sickbay. The conversation, such as it was, had been interesting to overhear, even though she hadn't intended to eves-drop. Clearly, there was something between the two junior grade lieutenants, and while it had been entertaining to listen to Lieutenant Val's screams and the medical officer's blunt retorts, Eva knew that it couldn't continue. Seeing that the medical officer was preparing for Eva's exam, Eva simply headed into the exam room and shut the curtain. "I take it that I don't need to get as unclothed as my science officer was for my exam?" she asked.

"Just remove your jacket and shirt, please Commander. I didn't really need Lieutenant Val to remove her skirt, but it was fun to torment her just a little," Miko said as she finished writing her notes in Val's folder and shifted to the Commander's.

"I take it the two of you don't get along very well?" Eva asked as she shrugged her jacket off and started unbuttoning her shirt. She hid her surprise at seeing someone using such an outdated form of record keeping or even performing an everyday task for which most people would simply use a computer for.

"No we don't, and rather than let it bother me I just get back at the spotted bitch every chance I get," Miko said before she blew on the end of her stethoscope and rubbed it on her lab coat sleeve before she pressed it against the Commander's chest. It didn't take nearly half the time to get the first officer's vitals as it had taken her to get Val's, and it was over within minutes. Stepping back to get her tricorder scan, Miko was surprised at how quiet the Commander was being. Once she was finished with her scan, she nodded to indicate that she was done and turned to make a few notes in the Commander's file.

Eva barely managed not to shudder at the stethoscope end was pressed against her skin. It was cool, but clearly not as cold as it had been when used on Lieutenant Val. Raising an eyebrow, Eva kept quiet until Her exam was completed, then stood as she put her shirt and jacket back on. "I was wondering Lieutenant Sato if you could tell me about the problem between you and Lieutenant Val," Eva said once she had finished dressing. "And I want to know the exact details."

"We just don't get along," Miko answered as she finished writing her notes out. There really wasn't much else to be said.

"I'd appreciate it if the two of you could find a peaceful resolution to your disagreement," Eva said. "You're both outstanding junior officers, and like it or not the two of you are both assigned to this ship and will have to work together. So I want this petty disagreement between the two of you to be settled. Is that understood?"

"I . . . I understand, Commander," Miko said after a long moment’s hesitation. She bowed her head to indicate that she would indeed make an effort to find some form of resolution to the rivalry with Lieutenant Val.

"Thank you, Lieutenant," Eva said as she offered a friendly smile towards the medical officer. "If you need me, all you have to do is call for me." with that, Eva started towards the door. There wasn't much else that could be done. She wanted to give the two officers the chance to reach a peaceful settlement on their own, and if they couldn't then she would have no choice but to step in. As Eva left sickbay, she turned and started towards the Captain's quarters. There was no sense in not sharing the joys of an early day with someone, and she had a feeling that she would need his advice soon enough.
