Eva opened her eyes and rubbed the sleep out of her eyes before she groaned and rolled over onto her back. The events of the previous day had insured that she had no problems falling asleep and staying that way. She was still just a little sore from being trampled by three of her own science personnel after being knocked to the deck, but it was a dull sensation that was easy to ignore. Throwing the covers off of her, Eva stood and stretched, determined that she would start putting her department in order. She would start by having a serious talk with that Trill lieutenant, Élan Val. However, before she could reach out and find her communicator badge, a voice beeped over the intercom.
"Commander Eva Grey and Lieutenant Élan Val, you are both required to report to sickbay immediately."
Eva frowned at not only the message but the tone of the woman who had spoken. To her knowledge, the Hyperion didn't have a chief medical officer on board, but there had been a steady flow of officers and crew since her arrival. Still, the tone was just a little out of line. Without bothering to answer, she walked over to the closet and pulled a fresh uniform out of the closet. Dressing quickly, she walked out of her quarters and proceeded to sickbay.
Élan yawned as the sound of the communications panel built into her nightstand woke her. It wasn't anything new, Starfleet officers and crew were supposed to be used to being aroused from their sleep, but it was too early, the previous day had been long and eventful. As had Élan's evening. Smiling as she remembered everything that had happened the night before, Élan reached out and tapped the call button. Her eyes snapped open as she heard the familiar voice of the eyeless bitch from medical summoning her and the chief science officer to sickbay.
"Heartless bitch," Élan muttered. Val squirmed as she rolled over and stood, adding her own protest to having their rest interrupted. Élan doubted that Val liked the medical officer any more than Élan did, but unfortunately she couldn't ignore this request. Grabbing the first set of clothing she could find, Élan eyed it before she rejected it and tossed the dress onto the floor. Next she grabbed a corset and a pair of black leggings, and remembering that her immediate superior would be present she had to discard those as well. Finally, Élan growled in the back of her throat as she grabbed the uniform skirt she had worn for part of the day before and dressed quickly, ignoring the fact that it smelled slightly like the arboretum. Once dressed, she groaned and headed towards sickbay.
Sickbay was quiet and appeared empty when Eva arrived. She had to admit that she, like so many others in Starfleet, disliked sickbay for some strange reason. There truly wasn't a definite reason or answer as to why the medical section on a star ship or base was avoided by Starfleet officers and enlisted crew alike, it was simply known to be. Clasping her hands behind her back, Eva took a step forward, looking for someone who might explain why she had been summoned here first thing in the morning.
Miko was sitting in the chief medical officer's office going through the service records of the crew that had been assigned to the Hyperion. Since she was the senior ranking medical officer on board, the thankless job of making sure everyone's medical files were up to date fell to her for the time being. She knew that many in Starfleet would go as long as possible before they would report in for physicals and regular checkups, but she wasn't going to allow herself to be lax on her duty of making sure that the Hyperion's crew all had their checkups. Hearing the door to sickbay open and close, Miko stood and walked to the main room. Spotting a woman who could only be the executive officer, Miko walked over.
"Commander Grey?" she asked.
"Yes, I'm Commander Eva Grey. And you are?" Eva asked as she studied the young Asian medical officer carefully. She took note of the woman's optical implants, which were an unusual color.
Élan walked into sickbay and instantly spied her nemesis talking to Commander Grey. Bristling slightly, the Trill science officer walked over and folded her arms across her chest.
"I came in here yesterday, why am I being dragged in here again today, and in front of the Commander of all people?" Élan demanded angrily.
"I'm going through the medical records for the entire crew and making sure that your files are all up to date," Miko said as she adjusted her implants slightly. She could tell that the Trill officer was upset, but Miko simply shrugged the attitude away.
"Since everyone's files are out of date, I've decided that everyone is going to have to take a full medical examination. I thought it would be best to start with the science department since you're the largest department on board and will take the longest. I selected the two highest ranking officers to start, since that will hopefully set an example for the rest of the crew," Miko explained, her attention mostly turned towards the executive officer.
"That does make sense," Eva said as she nodded thoughtfully. She shifted her attention towards the young Trill who she had met rather abruptly the day before and wondered briefly what Lieutenant Val's attitude towards the medical officer. Since she didn't know any of the officers or crewmen on the Hyperion, she decided to reserve judgment until later. "Lieutenant Val and I would be delighted to have our medical examinations done this morning, Lieutenant...?" she said after a moment.
"Lieutenant Miko Sato, Ma'am, and if you'll both give me a minute I'll grab your files," Miko said before she ducked back into the office.
"I find this entire charade offensive, Commander. I was in here yesterday after the lab explosion. There's no reason why I have to be back in here today," Élan said unhappily towards her immediate superior, wondering if it was even worth the effort to try and talk her way out of the exam.
"Lieutenant, it's standard Starfleet procedure to have a full medical examination conducted by ship or station medical personnel within twenty four hours after arrival," Eva said as she turned to face Élan fully. "And I don't want to hear another word from you in the effort of trying to get out of this exam. Lieutenant Sato is correct, we as officers, indeed the senior officers in our department, have to set an example for the others. So set your personnel feelings aside and get this over with. That's a direct order. Is that clear?"
"Yes, Commander, I fully understand," Élan said, clearly unhappy with following those orders. She would endure the humiliation of the exam and get away from sickbay as quickly as possible.
Miko stepped out of the office she had ducked into with a pair of Padds, two folders, a pen and a stethoscope draped around her neck. She was writing on one of the folders as she walked, and without looking up she went straight to the first empty exam room.
"Lieutenant Val, we'll start with you," Miko said.
