Mission: Upon Wings Anew

It hadn't quite been an hour since Starfleet Command had made a decision, but Captain John Wolfe boarded the Hyperion with a heavy heart and he wasn't very happy himself as he made his way through the ship to the bridge. His vidscreen meeting with Starfleet Command had been unusual and a tedious one, and the Padd he carried wasn't filled with good news. Entering the bridge, he sighed as he approached the ships first officer. "Commander Toric, can you gather the senior officers in the briefing room please in five minutes?" he asked.

Ryssa looked at the expression on his face for a moment and nodded. Whatever it was, it wasn't good. "Yes, sir." She sent the message, asking all senior staff to report in five minutes. that should give them just enough time to set aside what they were doing and head to the briefing room.

She signaled for an officer to take her place and logged out. "I'll get the room ready," she said.

"I'll join you in there now," John said. "You're the XO, and I want to give you a fair warning of what's coming. Everyone else I'm afraid will have to be broadsided with this."

She paused to look at him. "All right." That sounded ominous. She turned and continued on to the briefing room.

John followed the commander into the briefing room and waited until the doors closed before he sighed. "I'm afraid that Captain Theisman was severely injured from the explosion. Because of this, Starfleet Command has pulled him from active duty until he has recovered from his injuries. By recommendation and after careful consideration of the situation, Starfleet Command has ordered me to assume command of the Hyperion and her crew until further notice."

Ryssa half expected that. "Will he recover fully?" she asked.

"Starfleet Medical is still withholding a complete report, as it's too early to tell," John replied. "But I'm hoping for the best and that he makes a full recovery."

"So am I," Ryssa said.

John nodded. "I'm committed to doing the best job I can in command of the Hyperion, however I'm not very familiar with the internal Romulan mechanisms that make up the Star Empire. We'll be one ship, and the Romulans are a difficult people to deal with on a good day," he said.

"So I've heard. We'll do the best we can," she said, hoping she wasn't jinxing them.

"As we can only be expected to do, as always," John said.

Striker had seen the call for the Senior Staff. Grabbing a padd he moved from his Science Station; making sure to be covered and then to the requested area. "Commander, I take it we are being readied for departure?" Striding in and moving to a chair.

John nodded towards the newcomer from his chair. He knew that the Hyperion would be ready just as soon as the repairs and investigation were complete.

Once everyone had found a seat and settled in, John leaned forward. "Good day everyone. By now you all have heard that Captain Theisman was severely wounded in the attack in the airlock. Because of this Starfleet Command has placed me in command of the Hyperion. I know some of you were thinking that Captain west would have been assigned command, however Starfleet Command decided on my appointment as captain. Our first order of business is to complete repairs. Once that is done, we'll be on our way to the Romulan Empire."

Ryssa looked around to gauge the reaction of the others. She was aware of the changes, but not everyone was.

John nodded and continued. "Engineering, once we have the go ahead, we'll seal the airlock and separate from the shipyard scaffolding. The shipyard can beam materials and personnel on board, but I want everyone checked. Security, once our crew has been cleared and settled in, I want you to keep an eye on all visitors. Until we know more about who attacked us, I want to take every precaution possible. Starfleet Security is boosting all security measures on all installations across the federation."

Ryssa took notes. She wanted to help any of the department heads that needed it so they could get away without further incident. It was most likely someone didn't want them to go back to Romulan space.

John continued. "We'll be getting underway as soon as possible. Our mission mandate is to continue the exploration duties of the previous Hyperion, but our secondary mandate is to look for our missing ship and hopefully surviving crew members as well."

The original Hyperion had been missing for months, by the time the new ship arrived, there would likely be little hope of finding anyone alive, but Ryssa hoped they could at least find out what happened.

The Romulan Empire, interesting. Striker would not be soon admitting he had his work cut out for him, the fact that previously unaccusable area of space that most Federation explorers would never see will soon be open to him. This is why he had come here; the fact he would be utilizing his skills and equipment to gain the Knowledge of new part pf Space did fit right in his way of thinking and way of life.
The Captain was a tragedy; this change of things was the Fleet way; situations came up and people were involved in them, not always to the best outcome. He had liked the Commanding Officer; learning a new command structure and style is rudimentary, Striker could do that easily enough, yet he still felt some discomfort in having to make assurances that he would need resources and prove himself to a new Command Chain.

"I will have the Sciences stocked and ready by departure." Striker spoke. "There was no damage thus far but if I could have an Engineer to help me check the Sensory array manually it might help." He suggested. "If someone wanted us not to go tampering with the sensors; which I presume will be a key to our Mission Profile, would be a Logical target and I would like to know they are 'cleared' for full operations Sir."

"Get with Ops on calibrating the sensors, science should have full access to all sensors along with operations but we're going to be doubling our on-board security measures. I don't want to take any chances," John said.

"Of course, Captain, I would feel more at ease not having to be constantly looking over my shoulder." Striker said. "I will not require a 'tool handler' so the detached officer will be able to concentrate on their duties I will not be asking for a set of hands." He gave a diplomatic grin. "Thanks for the foresight, sir." He knew security was going to be primary for a bit and did not mind.

"Very good and it's not a problem at all," John said with a nod. "All right then, let's all get to work. If that's all, everyone is dismissed."
