Surveying The Damage

Daniel watched as Karen and her repair crew began their cleanup of the damaged science department. He had received notice that the new CO was now aboard a few minutes ago, and he figured now was as good a time as any to meet him. Also, he figured the captain would want to see the damage that had been done to the science lab.

=/\= Divaro to Captain Theisman...=/\= he called.

Already on his way to the chemistry lab that had been blown and burned, John raised his eyebrows as he heard the voice of who he guessed was the CEO over the commbadge. Tapping his badge, he spoke as the turbo lift continued on to deck eight. “Theisman here, go ahead,” he said.

=/\= Could you please meet me in Science Lab 3? =/\=

“I’m already on my way, in fact,” John paused as the turbo lift doors opened. Just down the corridor he could see the yellow tape barring the doorway leading into one of the science labs. It took barely thirty seconds for him to reach the lab doorway. “Commander Divaro?” he called.

Divaro wriggled out from beneath one of the control panels and stood up. "I'm Daniel Divaro," he said, wiping his hands.

“Captain John Theisman,” John said as he held out his hand. “I thought I’d check in and see how bad things were.”

"Well this lab is pretty beat up, as you can see..." as he shook the captain's hand. "Glad to meet you but I wish it were under better circumstances."

Taking a good look at the lab, John hid a grimace. The damage looked pretty bad, but fortunately it looked like it could be fully repaired quickly enough. "How bad was it?" he asked.

"I don't think anyone was seriously injured and we'll have this lab back up and running by tomorrow," Divaro said. "That is, provided nothing else goes wrong."

"That's something I agree on fully," John said with a nod. "But tomorrow will be fine. I don't want to rush your engineers." Looking inside the lab, John spotted a female engineer with the most unusual shape as far as her bust line went. Either she had a uniform jacket stuffed under her jacket, or she had a rather nice figure that most women would kill for. He found that he was staring and shook his head. "So, um, other than the damage here, how is engineering holding up?

"We're doing pretty well, all things considered. Until this happened," he said with a sweep of his arm to indicate the wrecked lab, "we were doing an inventory of everything that we may need for the upcoming mission. Which, by the way, we should be ready to shove off in about 48 hours."

“Excellent,” John said. “That gives us an extra day to get everything settled and ready for launch.

"Walker, my assistant CEO is in charge of the inventory. Would you like to meet her as well?"

“Sure,” John nodded, wondering who exactly the ACEO was.

"Hey Karen..." he called out. "I want you to meet our new captain."

Walker approached the two men, brushing dirt and soot from her ample chest as she did. "Pleased to meet you, captain..." she said, extending her hand and looking the captain up and down.

John blinked as the well endowed and busty engineer he had noticed before walked over and spoke. He also noticed that she was checking him out, which made him blush just slightly. He finally held his hand out and shook Walker’s hand. “Pleased to meet you as well, Lieutenant,” John said, making sure his eyes looked at her own eyes and no where else.

"We should have this lab back in operation by 2300, captain..." Walker said. "We're just about through with the cleanup and will be starting on structural repairs soon. Once the structural repairs are done, then OPS can get in and start working on the hardware and software repairs. Because of this, I'm afraid my report on the status of everything in Engineering will be later than planned," Walker said. "I had originally figured all the reports to be ready by 0800 but now it looks like it will be at least 1600 tomorrow."

"That's fine, Miss Walker," John said. "As I told Commander Divaro, we have at least three days before Starfleet Command expects us to depart for Starbase 171."

At the mention of Starbase 171, Divaro did a mental double-take. "Oh hell no..." he muttered, then turned to the CO. "Captain, if you don't mind I think I'll just get off and stay here until you get back." He knew, of course that this was really not going to be an option--but he could wish.

"Well, that would be a problem, since the Hyperion isn't coming back this way. In fact, the Hyperion won't be back in Federation space for at least seven years, and more than likely not even then if our mission goes correctly," John said with a frown. "Is there a problem?"

"I'm really not keen on going to Starbase 171 if I can avoid it..." Divaro said, "...because...uh...well...because my former wife is the Chief Medical Officer there, and...well...let's just say that our parting was not an amicable one..."

"I see," John said. "Well, if you want, you're more than welcomed to not enjoy shore leave when we get to 171, but that's our next stop before Romulus. I don't need to have medical on stand by and a security SAR team ready when we arrive do I?"

"No I don't think you will," Divaro answered. "171 is a fairly large starbase so I'll do my best to stay away from her."

John nodded. "That bad, huh?" he asked.

"You could say that?" Divaro said. "And the fact that Lieutenant Walker is aboard won't make things any easier."

"Oh, and why is that?" John asked.

"She did her cadet cruise aboard the USS Morningstar ten years ago when I was an Engineering Officer there," he answered. "And at the time, Walker had a huge crush on me and Velah knew about it. Nothing ever happened between Walker and myself other than her kissing me one time. And at the time of the kiss, she was told that nothing would ever come of it as far as I was concerned, but Velah resented her for it anyway"

"Nothing like a jealous ex wife to make you have a really bad day, huh?" John said with a light chuckle. "Well, as long as I don't get a call from station security, I'll stay out of it. Just keep in mind that we are getting some of 171's personnel when we arrive. Maybe we won't get her too."

"With my luck we WILL get her," Divaro said. "And if we do something tells me that my life is about to get a whole lot more complicated."

"Well, she's not in engineering, is she?" John asked.

"No, she's in medical. In fact, she's the Chief Medical Officer for 171," he answered. "And that's what concerns me. Since we don't have a CMO, I'm afraid that when we leave 171 we WILL have one and it will be her." He looked at the captain and grinned. "If that happens I might just have to install a bunk in my office and hibernate there."

"Then even if she's assigned to the Hyperion, you two shouldn't have to deal with each other much outside the normal course of your duties. If she is assigned to us, I'll make sure she understands not to cause trouble. I'm not having my chief engineer living in engineering," John promised.

"So any idea when we'll be shoving off on this adventure?"

"We'll depart for 171 in three days, with a two day stop there and then on to Romulus. We'll be there for at least a week before we get started on the fun part," John said.

"Three days hmm? We'll be ready," he assured the CO. "I know it probably doesn't look like it right now..." he said, indicating the science lab, "...but Karen is good at what she does--very good. If she says she'll have the lab back together in two days, you can probably bet on one."

"Very well," John said with a nod. "I'll get out of your way then, Commander. I need to go check in on the bridge and settle in. If you or anyone else needs me for the next few hours, I'll be in my ready room."

"And I will either be here or in engineering, captain."

"Very good. I'll get out of your hair, then. Carry on, Commander," John said with a nod. Turning, he started towards the turbolift and his ready room.
