Ghost of a Chance: Epilogue
Location: Security Office/Holodeck
Timeline: Sometime After: Sudden Adjustments
OLD:
Brodin took a moment, placing his hand on the sand, before looking over to Jason and beginning. "You know how, in surfing, some catch that certain wave. That perfect wave. That wave that is just right and you ride so smoothly and so peacefully that you can't help but feel... feel like the world disappears. It disappears and it’s just you and that perfect wave." He away, toward the water, and continued. "But then, its gone, and pick up your board and walk off, feeling complete, but not really."
The Platonian chuckled softly, resisting the urge to but in, however allowing his close friend to continue uninterrupted.
NEW:
"Then there is a mourning period. You go back to the beach and go out, into the water, hoping to catch a wave. When you do, it’s just... not the same. It doesn't have the same feel. It's not right. It's not like the last one, and so afterwards, you go back out there and wait again. Wave after wave come by and they aren't the same. They aren't that perfect wave. You begin to compare all other waves to it, nitpicking at every wave that comes by, because it’s not that perfect wave." Brodin looking back to Jason, grabbing him by the arm, and saying. "You start to wonder, maybe it’s not the water. Maybe its you. You're not hitting the water at the right time, or maybe you're in the wrong place, so you chase it. You chase it like a dog in heat until... you get obsessed with it. You get so obsessed that you start doing stupid things just to get to it, but you keep missing it, putting yourself in further danger."
Jason let out a groan and took the towel from his shoulder, throwing it at Brodin, hitting him in the face with it. "Alright... alright. I am getting the hint. It’s not about surfing. It's about... her."
"Thank God." Brodin shout after taking the towel from his face, placing it at his feet. "I was beginning to run out of things to say." He let out a bit of a laugh before ending it in a deep sign. "Look, Jay, I get it. She's your wave and you want her back. It's obvious, but things are complicated. Not just because of the job, but because she's grown. Just like you in some ways. The thing is, when you see her, your head tries to force her to be a person she put behind her and it’s not helping. It is pushing her away."
"This is my problem, not yours, Brodin." Jason replied sternly, looking away, before adding. "Stay out of it."
Brodin nodded his head and placed his hand on his friends’ shoulder. "I get it, Jay. I do, but I'm more than your friend. I'm your partner. More importantly? I'm your brother. As your brother, it’s my job, to not only protect you from harm, but protect you from yourself. Jay, if you keep pushing, you're going to push her so far you won't ever have a chance to get her back. She's your wave, so do the smart thing, and be patient. Remember what you told me the first time I picked up a board?"
"The pointed end goes in front of you?"
"After that." Brodin replied quickly.
"The side, with the fins, go under the water." Jason said firmly.
"No... well yes, but afterward." Brodin chuckled slightly before raising his voice.
Jason smiled, taking a deep breath, before answering in a low tone. "You won't get it the on your first try. Sometimes you'll be waiting for hours with nothing but calm waters under your board. You need to be patient. Don't try to force it. Be patient. Be calm. Feel the water and you'll know when to ride."
Brodin nodded his head. "Yes, that." He said as he patted Jason's shoulder. "You can't force her to be your perfect wave. Yes, you guys have a history. A nice history, but it’s in the past and you two aren't the same as you were back then. You got to be patient with her and take it slowly. Hopefully, the feels you shared are still there, but you forcing it out will only make matters worse. You don't want to end up having her hate your forever, or even, slapping you with a court martial for harassment."
"She already hates me." Jason replied softly.
"She doesn't hate you. What's to hate?" Brodin answered with a smile. "You were doing your job and, only a select few, know you tried to make it right by giving them enough of a head start. It's been a long time, since that, so there is no reason to bring it up anymore. Get to know her now. I am sure she knows how you feel, so get to know the new her and let her know the new you."
Jason laughed softly. "There isn't much of a difference between the old me and the new one."
"There is... you just don't notice because it’s your differences." Brodin replied softly. "Someone on the outside, like me or Mac, would know the difference when they saw it." He took a deep breath and looked towards the water. "Don't force the wave, Brother. Feel it. Let it come to you."
Jason nodded his head slightly, looking toward the water, before replying softly. "I get it, Brodin." He said softly before adding. "Thank you."
"That's what I am here for." Brodin said with a smile. "To keep you from doing something stupid."
"Or doing something stupid with me." Jason added with a laughed.
"Guilty." Brodin replied with a laugh.
Jason placed his hand on his friends’ shoulder and let out a sigh. They sat there, looking at the water, until finally he said softly. "Hey, Brodin?"
"Yeah?"
"Auntie Moa gave me a tin of her Snooker-Doodles before I left for this assignment." Jason said softly.
"Oh, hell yeah." Brodin stood up, whipping the sand off his uniform, before heading towards the door.
"Where are you going?" Jason asked, raising a brow.
"I'm going to get me some Snooker-Doodles." Brodin shouted before reaching the door.
Jason shouted back. "How are you planning on getting into my locked quarters?"
"You use the same lock code you always do." Brodin yelled back, turning around to face Jason, before adding. "It's still E Komo Mai, Kahu!" (Enter Guardian!)
Jason raised a brow before standing up, grabbing his towel, before running toward the door. "If you don't save me some cookies, I am going to kick your ass, Fyre!"
Brodin laughed as he ran out the door, soon followed by an angry Jason.
