Mission:
Into the Raptor's Shadow
Location: Counselor's Office
ON
Velah was in her typical skirted uniform as she walk through the corridors towards the Counselor's Office; she had an appointment and she would not be late, this was not for her evaluation, she had seen to that, this was strictly her needing to have a friend to talk things out and since it involved a subject she felt might be best done by her friend's professional side.
She rang the chime of the office waiting to get to a safe place to talk.
Zhara had a pot of hibiscus tea on the conversation table and soft jazz playing in the background. And just in case she might need it, she also had a dartboard on the far wall with a dozen darts ready in case Velah needed to use them.
Velah came into the office and the scents of the tea caught her only slightly after the music touched her through the ears. SHe took a breath and smiled as Velah had to admit Zhara had done some homework.
"One does not often associate a counselor with ... darts." She said with a smile. "I must admit I am impressed at your hobbies?"
"A counselor uses what is most effective to help the client," Zhara replied. "I am a sensualist. I believe in engaging the senses as well as the mind. The darts are in case you need to let off a little pent-up frustration." She nodded to a seat and poured Velah a cup of tea.
"You know I am good with those things, even sauced I can hit what I aim at, though the targets expand the drunker I get in relationship to the more insulting they get." She giggle. "I have been called a 'Pain in the bum in sixteen languages."
"I will not tell you what they call me," Zhara replied with a humorous smile. "Many do not like counselors who tell them that they need to change their behavior. They much prefer being told they are the victim."
"I knew I liked you." Velah laughed. "I will not call you anything vulgar in Orion." SHe looked to her friend. "I am uneasy about Daniel and his dating; well not that, but more an emphasis as to when will he put a girlfriend to meet Sassy. In the time we have been divorced and after he left I have not brought a man back to our quarters. I decided until it was serious enough for the man to be permanent in my life Sassy did not need to be confused. She knows I date but not whom or what we do?"
"That is definitely something to worry about," Zhara said. "I agree with you that a single parent should not expose a child to a string of men or women who have no permanence. However, you can't dictate what your husband does. What you can do is monitor your daughter's behavior. If it changes, bring her to me and we'll have a talk."
"Is it wrong that I am concerned?" She asked. "I know in my head he is not the type to really bring a string of women along but I am having trouble letting it ride. I like the rules I put down and think they are for Sassy, but if I am holding too tight I am missing the signals, I think I am just trying to be a good mother and look out for my child?"
"You are, but you can't impose your own code of conduct on yoru ex-husband," Zhara replied. "You can talk to him about your concerns and ask him not to bring his women around when he has Sassy, but if he doesn't agree, you can't enforce it -- unless he crosses a line and puts his daughter at risk. Then you have a reason to restrict access to her. But unless that happens, you can instill the values you want your daughter to have on her and hope they stick."
A dart seemed to just appear in the Triple 20 slot.
"He would not cross that line; I was married to him long enough to know that much." The next dart in the Triple 19 and the third in the triple 18. "Of all the things I will give him credit upon; when he is around Sassy he is a Good father." SHe started towards the dart board to get the darts, spinning to face her friend. "Only with me is he a good-for -nothing low- life that walked out and broke my heart."
"See? Even he has some redeeming qualities," Zhara said. She picked up a dart and carefully aimed, hitting just off center. "That comes from practice."
"Darts or trying to find redeeming qualities in an Ex-Husband?" Velah snickered. "You have to be specific Counselor?"
"I don't have an ex-husband," Zhara said with a twinkle in her eye, "But I have had a relationship or two where a dartboard came in handy. It's also a good way to relieve frustrations in general."
"I have always wanted to have Girl Talk over darts, Thank you Zhara, you are the best." She winked. "I have missed having someone to really talk with."
"With you, it is a pleasure," Zhara assured her. "We should have tea together. I have some unusual spice teas you might like. Tea and darts can be a very nice combination."
"I am not half bad with crumpets." Veleah was setting up for her next throw. "And to think I did not even need picture of Daniel for this." She giggled.
"I would call that progress," Zhara said cheerfully, giving her friend a hug. "Now, I must prepare for the next appointment. See you later."
