ON

Exactly one hour after the Captain asked to see her and Lieutenant Rynn, Jayde walked off the bridge and knocked on the door of the Captain's ready room.

Zhara arrived a moment later. "Good. I was afraid I would be late. Any idea what the Captain wants with us?"

"None at all," Jayde replied.

Zhara shrugged her shoulders. "We'll find out soon enough."

"Indeed."

John had spent the hour walking throughout the ship, taking care of a few of those little nit picky items that had been on his list of things to do for a while and dropped by the arboretum to think and clear his head. Walking back to his ready room for his meeting with Jayde and Rynn, he caught sight of both of them standing outside his ofice door as he walked around a bend in the corridor. "Sorry I'm a few minutes late," he said as he walked up and pressed the door controls. The door slid open with a low hiss. Waving his hand in invitation for them to enter, he followed the officers inside and walked to his desk. "I had a few thoughts run through my head as we crossed the Neutral Zone an hour ago, and I wanted to share my concerns with both of you first," he said as he sat down and motioned for them to sit as well.

"My first concern is for you, counselor. At least half, if not more, of the crew has some experience with the Romulans and the Neutral Zone patrols, and if there's one thing that's a concern for me it's if there is a grand scheme that the Romulans are playing at and we're merely pawns in some twisted game. If I'm worried about it, then I'm sure most of the crew are as well. There's also the fact that we're not just out and alone in deep space, we're literally digging around in someone else's back yard, and that someone was at best an uneasy ally less than a decade ago and as close to an enemy as one can be for over a century before that. The crew is likely to be on edge once the fact that we're out here for real sinks in. I was wondering if you can offer any suggestions on how we can calm down the nerves before things get out of hand."

Zhara nodded. "They need to be kept busy. The problems will mount if we go too long without anything to do. Organized drills, activities, holodeck time, will all help to keep the crew on an even keel. Perhaps some sports competitions from time to time? That would change focus from teh Romulans to which team is on top."

John nodded silently as the counselor listed off her ideas. Each was a good idea, but figuring out how to get everything started and going might take some time. When she finished, he leaned back in his chair. "The suggestion of drills leads me to my other concern," he said. "I know that there have been some drills scheduled, so I was wondering how those were going so far?"

"My Master-at-Arms has set some up, but she has yet to do more than announce them," Jayde replied. "Liang will be starting martial arts training and weapons training in a few days."

"Ask her if she can add internal ship defense tactics to the drills as well. I want everyone on board to be able to assist in defending the ship if need be," John said with a solem nod.

Jayde nodded. "Yes, we can do that."

"I also want the crew to be familiar with all areas of the ship as well," John added. "It's one thing to be able to eventually find your way to a location, but I highly doubt that anyone is going to be able to stop and check a map if we have an emergency situation on board. Even I'm not completely familiar with every deck, and I'm the captain," he finished with a slight smile.

Both women nodded. "I can put something together to help with that," Zhara said.

"As do I," Jayde added. "We shall work together and come up with a viable plan."

"Excellent," John said with a nod. "If there's anything I can do to help, please feel free to let me know."

Both women nodded. "Is there anything else you would like us to do?" Zhara asked.

"That's all for now. Thank you, Commander, Lieutenant," John said, offering a nod and a tight smile to each of them as he stood. He reached out to shake hands with both officers.

"Thank you, Captain," Jayde said, shaking his hand. "I will send you the revised schedule when it is completed."

Zhara glanced at Jayde and smiled, then shook the Captain's hand. "We'll keep the crew on an even keel. Morale is important, especially right now."

"Thank you, both of you," John said as he nodded in agreement. "I won't keep either of you any longer, then." As the two officers left his ready room, John sighed and sat down before he reached out to the stack of padds on the corner of his desk. They had been gathering, congregating, and aggravating him with their presence, and he needed to at least read through them. Thumbing the screen on the padd on, he leaned back in his chair and started reading, hoping that there wouldn't be any horrible surprises waiting for the Hyperion in the near future.
