Mission: Pathways

The bridge was humming with the general background noise that came with a full staff on duty. Taking a step out of the turbo lift, John paused and took a deep breath as he looked around. Immediately in front of him was the new chief security and tactical officer at the internal security station. A Bajoran/Vulcan Lieutenant Commander whom he hadn't had time to meet or get to know, she had come highly recommended. Looking across the bridge, he took note of the last minute changes that had occurred in the Hyperion's personnel. Commander Grey had been recalled and reassigned by Starfleet Command with no notice other than a late night call. It left the Hyperion without an executive officer or a chief science officer, something John would have to remedy en route to 171.

Taking a step forward, John caught the eye of one of the junior officers at the back of the bridge. He instantly went to attention and turned to face the bridge. "Captain on the bridge!" he barked. Instantly, all activity halted and John felt the eyes of every officer and crewman on him as he walked towards the command chair. His chair. Coming to a stop beside his chair, he stopped and let his eyes sweep across the bridge.

"Despite all the difficulties that this crew has faced over the last few days, the Hyperion has been declared ready for active duty and has been given her orders," John said. "I expect the very best from each and every one of you, and I promise that you'll get the same from me in return. With that in mind, all hands are to report to duty stations."

"All hands, report to duty stations," the officer of the watch barked. The order was repeated across the ship as the crew stopped what they were doing and jumped to their stations. As the bridge crew returned to duty, John sat down in his chair and leaned back.

"Sir, engineering reports that impulse and warp drive are both online and standing by. All departments report ready for departure," the officer of the watch finally reported after several minutes.

"Helm, break orbit, come about to a heading of 318 by 049, set speed at one half impulse. Stand by to go to warp 8 on my command," John said. "Set view screen to forward view."

The view screen came to life with the forward view. Earth filled the screen for several minutes until the Hyperion banked away, and then the screen shifted and was filled with the stars as the ship turned away from Earth and towards deep space.

"Captain, course and speed to star base 171 ready for your command," the helm officer said.

John leaned back in his chair and smiled. "Engage," he ordered. The Hyperion hovered in space for just a moment, and then stretched as she leapt to warp speed.
