ON
Velah was standing with her soft blue mini dress that was half way to her knee with the sloping neckline that was socially accepted but still on her seemed to accent her Orion Heritage traits. The slight flair to the dress gave emphasis to her legs; dancer legs from her constant ritual of exercise and dancing. Open toe low heels of a strap style that wound up half her calf. The silver ear rings were with the longer dangling type that caught the light to match the choker with one hundred silver strips that were short in the back and growing in length to the center then dwindling in a mirror effect
She stood in a line with Sassi in front of her, the fact she had been bouncing about since Velah woke her to go meet the ship and hopefully her father once the docking hatch had opened. It had been too long since Sassi had seen her father; Velah had mixed emotions about if she had not seen him for too long or needed not to see him for a bit longer? Her arms were around her daughter in an affectionate way of holding the kid from bouncing away.
The hatch was open and those needing to exit were filing by; it almost appeared that Velah and Sassi were waiting for the disembarking of Daniel rather than their turn to enter the ship. Truth be known Velah had to say good bye and while she thought it a bit hard she did not mind as much as she thought she might considering the nearly decade she spent on this base. There were things that had to be said; terms that needed to be established and rules put in place between she and Daniel. Those could wait as Sassi needed time with her father.
Velah saw him first, he still had that damned confidant swagger; looking at it now she did not have the hypnotic effect she had once been victim in her youthful vigor. She leaned down to her daughter's ear.
"Go get him." Velah let her daughter go and rush her father as Velah stood in place with her hands in front of her holding the two padds.
Daniel stood just inside the ship's docking port waiting for Sassi--and his ex-wife--to arrive. It wasn't long before he spotted Velah. After all, she would stand out in a crowd anywhere. She was standing behind a young dark-haired female--but where was Sassi? Suddenly Daniel realized that the person standing in front of Velah WAS Sassi. Gods, how she had grown. She was almost as tall as Velah now and he could hardly believe it was her when she ran up and grabbed him. "Hi, daddy..." she said breathlessly.
Daniel wrapped his arms around his daughter and held her tightly, unable to say anything for a moment as he struggled to hold back tears that threatened to escape. Finally he managed to say "Hi, little one..." Then, taking another look at her he added "Although I guess I can't call you that now--you're almost as tall as your mom. I can't believe how much you've grown."
He then turned his attention to Velah, who had been standing a short distance away to give him time with Sassi. "Hey Punkin..." he said instinctively, then thought 'Holy Hell--where did THAT come from?' He had not called her by that pet name in years.
Velah felt a jolt; a bit of a spike as she had not been called that in years, not that she wanted to hear that reference again as it ... hurt. Of course she managed to keep back the reply of 'Sas-mento' which in Orion meant 'Loved man' and it was a basis for Sassi' name which in Orion was "Beloved.' Velah had heard a few things since a call from Grand mama; like the fact Daniel had brought another woman to the restaurant, Sassi was right to ask if Daniel had someone, but bringing her to Italy meant she was making an impression.
"Daniel, you are looking... vibrant." SHe stepped closer and gave him a peck on the cheek at least for old times and the sake of Sassi. "I thought she might like time with her father, she had been climbing the walls to see you." She smiled in a warm way and handed him a Padd. "Here is the transfer orders for Sassi and I had her pack a weekend bag." Velah continued to smile. "You can check her in and not be bound by time, month and a half in a ship can make it hard." She understood. "I will see to our things and get myself checked in and all of that." SHe leaned to kiss Sassi. "You owe me setting up your room when you are back." She winked.
"Yes mom..." Sassi replied, giving her mom a slight eyeroll.
"Enjoy the fruits of your labors Daniel she leaned closer as though she might give another peck to his cheek and whispered in his ear. "And keep the spotty chick away until Sassi gets used to her father please. Our deal is not to shock her and no intro to ... other replacements until it is really serious." She leaned away and kept the now polite smile for all those around. "We can talk about the all the other stuff later." She gave him that knowing nod that was a final note in her book; even Sassi knew that look. "Now anything else before you go off for your fun?"
"You do realize that I'm not set up in family quarters, right?" Daniel asked Velah. "Even though I'm the CEO, my quarters are for one person only." He turned his attention to Sassi. "I'm not trying to put you off," he said. "Really, I'm not. But the honest truth is--you may have to stay with your mom until I can arrange for larger quarters."
"You know she inherited your stubborness." Velah said with a sly smirk. "You are all she had talked about since I told her we were leaving and why.
"But I want to stay with you dad..." Sassi said quickly, her voice beginning to quiver a bit. "I haven't seen you in so long. I'll sleep on your couch. I'll sleep on the floor. I'll..." Daniel caught her look and it appeared as if she were about to cry. He continued to hold her tightly as he spoke. "Okay, we'll figure out a way to make it work somehow," he said finally, "because you don't know how much I have missed you." He then looked at Velah and mouthed silently "We need to talk--later..."
"Show the OPS chief the JAG orders and it might hasten your getting more quarters." She said quietly and watched them for a second; her own head showing signs of green flushing, he had known and did NOTHING to prepare for his daughter; the court orders would have gotten him something. "Wait..." She took a deep breath and stepped forward slightly to stand very close. "I have quarters with two room and a da...ng couch. When you come back bring her home I have to meet the Captain and my staff. I 'thought' to use the time you have her to be easy on us both but since I will not have 'our' daughter sleeping on a floor her 'ill- prepared father will have to sleep on what I hope is a very short couch." Velah sighed. "You can be with her as I will make it a point to spend my time away but..." She raised a finger. "I will not make YOUR arrangements to take care of Sassi and you are not just hanging about my dwellings, the two days you have her is all you get." She warned. "After that she can come visit but she has to sleep at home until you get this settled." This was as much as she would give him and only to not see er daughter cry did she give him that much.
"There you go again Velah..." Daniel said, trying to keep himself calm for Sassi's sake. "Jumping to a conclusion before you have heard all the options. I, too, have a couch in my quarters. I will sleep on it and give Sassi my bed. There--problem solved."
"Have a good time with your father." Velah leaned down slightly to kiss her child on the cheek. "See you in a couple of days." She looked to Daniel and with the smile that won so many hearts of men by Orion females Velah winked and turned on her heels to start away, holding up a hand and wiggling fingers good-bye so neither one of them could see her face.
Sassi only really felt strong emotions from people and had greater insights to those she loved and knew well; she knew her mother more than anyone; it had been Sassi and Mother against the universe for a couple of years now, and she was not so easy for her mother to hide really big feelings from her. Even though only 25% of the Betazoid genetics were in her system, Sassi could still sense emotions sometimes and her Mother was not her usually high and ready for emotional sparring mood, her Mother was not in a happy place when around daddy.
Daniel could sense the mixture of emotions from both Sassi and Velah and he knew that this first separation was not going to be easy for either of them. Most of what he was sensing from Velah was directed solely at him. What was directed from her to Sassi was simply concern and anxiety for her being away.
"Mom is not liking this..." Sassi felt it. "Have you ever seen her cry Daddy?" Sassi asked as she was torn betweenn wanting to comfort her mother and spend time with her father, but her Mother did not want to ruin Sassi's time. "It must be hard for her seeing you again; I thought she would have been....mad or something?"
"I have seen her cry...unfortunately..." Divaro said slowly. "Most recently the day I left Starbase 171 on the Indianapolis. There were tears all around. Your mom, you...and me. Do you remember that day?"
"Not really daddy," she answered slowly as her dad began to lead her away. "I don't remember you leaving--I just remember you being gone."
Her statement hit him squarely in the chest like a phaser blast. Leave it to a child to bring something to the forefront like that.
