Mission: Pathways
John had almost finished up with the day’s paperwork and started to relax. There was always a stack of things to go over when a new star ship launched, and so far the Hyperion had had only one small delay. The thought of the chemistry lab explosion still drew a frown from some people when it was mentioned, but by now half of the crew was laughing over it. John was in both categories. It was a serious matter, but some of the details were just a little entertaining. He just hoped it didn't become a standard everyday thing.
"Captain? There's a Captain Sean Harris from Star base 171 wanting to speak to you. He's pretty insistent," the voice of the duty watch officer said over the comm.
"Put it through in here," John sighed as he turned to the monitor that was rising out of the top of his desk. The image of a human man wearing the red of command and the four gold pips of a captain appeared.
"Captain Theisman. I'm sorry to bother you but I wanted to contact you personally with this matter," Sean said.
"What can I do for you Captain Harris," John asked as he leaned back in his chair.
"My chief medical officer just requested a transfer to the Hyperion. I've approved it on my end, but I wanted to talk to you about it. She's pretty I insistent about getting the transfer," Sean said.
"Well, I need a chief medical officer, so if yours wants to transfer to the Hyperion I don't see why the transfer wouldn't be approved," John said. "I wouldn't want to leave you shorthanded, though, or without a CMO."
"I've got another officer ready to step up and take over medical. She'll even have a few weeks of supervision until you get here," Sean said, shrugging off the concern.
"Well, I plan on our departure from Earth to be sometime tomorrow, probably around midday," John said with a nod. "It's a forty nine day flight to Romulus, plus a two day stop at 171. I'd like to get the unpleasant stuff out of the way as quickly as possible."
"I understand that," Sean said. "I can shave a day off of that by having everything ready to transport to the Hyperion as soon as you arrive."
"I'd appreciate that. Oh, what's the name of your CMO? I'll go ahead and approve of the transfer as soon as it clears my desk, that way there's less red tape," John said.
"Lieutenant Commander Velah," Sean said. "I'll see you in a few weeks captain. Good luck. 171 out."
John stared at the blank monitor screen for a long time before he shook his head. It didn't take him long to figure out where he had heard that name before, and when he did he remembered the conversation involved. "Shit," he muttered. Velah, Divaro's ex wife. That had to be same person. Pressing a control on his desk, John watched the monitor slide back down into the desk and sighed. Divaro most likely wasn't going to like this. Standing, John sighed and headed to the door. At least he had some warning of the maelstrom that was going to hit when the Hyperion shortly. Now he had to go prepare for the worse.
