The fact that she would have to do the painful thing she really wanted to avoid, she knew that Sassi was out at a friend's house since this was not a School Night. She had choosen a more simple outfit so not to give the wrong impression for her reasoning of asking him here. It staqrted with a nearly knee length pleated skirt of black, no hose tonight and the black open toe wedges. She matched it with an Ivory blouse long sleeved number and a peekaboo collar.
Her short black vest gave her a cute aspect to her attire; a pair of baby pearl earrings that matched the necklace of small pearls that matched the ear rings gave a note of elegance. She wanted to look pretty but not seductive; maybe being bare legged had been a mistake with the open toe low heels? She had a heritage that helped her look attractive; she never really flaunted it all that much as it seemed to alienate her from other women, playing it more low key assred Velah had girlfriends she could hang out with.
The quarters were family sized and for off world very large; much larger than the cabins she and Daniel had in the beginning; the Star Base is the closest thing to having a ground apartment, she still had a feling of it closing in on her at the moment, it was going to be much larger when she started packing it all up, then with all the junk it will seem huge.
Still looking around there was a lot of her here, Sassi was the focus of the pictures and mostly Daniel was phased out except for a few pictures. The last family image hung in the Main Living area, Velah never had the courage or reasoning to take it down. It was the last image she had of a famly unit; or she is getting sentimental in her old age? She had not hit the big four-oh but it loomed very close. The smal bit thta were qaround that knd of stood out is the exotic collection of dolls; some alien versions mixed with the Human ones. It seemed little girls everywhere in the universe loved dolls. Her collection was larger than she could display without it becoming clutter. A few nlittle suverniers from along her travels and momentoes of trips with Sassi all about the room.
The chime sounded; more like a very sick bird for some reason.
The door opened and her heart snapped her back to the present; it skipped a little at the man entering; his salt and pepper hair and well trimmed jaw line beard always seemed to do that to her. He had on dark brown slacks and an earth toned long sleeve shirt, the misionart style collar was more like a uniform shirt, Joseph did not seem as comfortable in clothing outside his uniform. Once out of his uniform around her there were no problems with his being able to relax and have a good time. She met him half way to get a greeting kiss; he had really kissable lips.
"I was half expecting Sassi to be around?" He glanced about.
"She is busy so I thought you might like a look at how the other side lives?" Velah answered. "Can I get you a drink?"
"You okay?" Joseph asked while holding her close. "I mean you have never brought me to your quarters and you were very clear only for important events might I see the inside because of Sassi?"
"I'll get you a strong one." Velah said before she thought.
"Why would I need one?" He did not let her go yet.
"I am being transferred." She all but blurt out. "The USS Hyperion needs a Chief Medical Officer and I am the one for the job." She said truthfully. It is only a matter of waiting before the ball start rolling and I will have to pack this all away for transit." She gave a weak smile. "I wanted you to see a bit more of me and how I live."
He let go and stepped back. "You are the best Neurologist in the sector, how did a star ship get your transfer; this is a much better facility for your talents?" Joseph asked.
"The reasons are not as important as the fact I have to go." She felt the distance growing; this is not her kind of conversation. "The transfer is already in the works and the Commanading Officer approval of the transfer is the last thing holding my packing now." She continued.
"This is awful damn sudden." Joseph snapped. "Usually you get more notice for these kind of things?"
"I just got word of it myself and the decision was not that hard to make considering the circumstances." Velah told him. "I saw no way out of the transfer so now I am telling you, Sassi knows and wanted time to be iwth her friends so that is why she is not here."
"SO why are you taking a transfer so radily?" Joseph stepped to try and look her in the eyes but hse could not meet his gaze, he gently used her chin to guide her eyes to him. "What are you not telling me; I know the CO would not just sign off you leaving?"
"Sassi is leaving." Velah said solemly. "She is going to the Hyperion to be with her father during his scheduled time."
"SO then shegoes on vacations with him and ..." Joseph went to say.
"I have served on star ships, I do not trust them to be back at port on time and such; there is no Chief on the ship and so I can be near my daughter."
"Star Fleet ships are reliable." He tried to tell her. "You have a career here you know and ... me?"
"Yes, and you are logical but I am not that strong; I need to be near my daughter; even if I do not see her every night if something happens I want to be there." She said simply. "I know Daniel will do his best yet I am not getting a good feeling about her going alone so I will go with her."
"SO you just leave us aside?"
"I tried the long distance when I was married; absence does not make the heart fonder and it was an ugly propisistion, I did not like it then so I am not going through it now. That is a pain when each side gets less and less able to deal with it." She explained. "I would not put anyone through that, it grows not into missing one another but hating the choices. I lost a marriage over it so I do not want that again." Velah told him with as much fake decisiveness as she could muster.
"You take the easy way out because it failed once?"
"I was married and could not make it work; what chance do we have?" She asked him.
Joseph looked at her in a way she realized was the wrong way to put that statement. "Good bye Velah." Joseph said and just left her standing there.
"Orion Girl does it again." Velah said to herself. "SHe would not cry ten seconds after he left...
She lasted thirty before rushing to hre toom to let it out.
