Mission: Ghost of a Chance: Epilogue
Evelyn frowned as she stared at the crew roster and not for the first time wondered just how different her command style was compared to Captain Theisman. She couldn't believe some of the empty positions that had remained empty on the roster, clearly since the Hyperion had left Federation space. Reaching out and tapping the comm, she hailed her first officer. "Knight to Jayde, please report to my ready room as soon as possible." she said.
"On my way." Jayde took a moment to save her log and stood, stretching to ease her tight muscles. She needed to get with Liang and practice. She was getting lax in her new position.
She rang the chime on the captain's door and waited for her to gain admittance before stepping inside. "How can I be of help, ma'am?"
Evelyn offered her first officer a brief smile as she entered. Jayde was punctual and straight to the point, which was good. Picking up a padd she she prepared while waiting for the commander to arrive, she handed it to Jayde and leaned back in her chair while waving her first officer to sit down. "We have several positions of importance that have been vacant for quite some time, and I want to get them filled before we set off. Top among the positions are communications, strategic operations, diplomatic chief, and chief of the boat," she said.
Jayde nodded. "Do you have any personnel you're considering?"
"For diplomatic chief, I thought about perhaps Lieutenant Rynn if she can handle the extra workload," Evelyn said. "I wanted to get your opinion on anyone you might have in mind before I start making changes."
"I believe Zhara would do well. She has performed the office of diplomat before," Jayde said. "I know of no one on the ship who could be effective as strategic operations." She knew someone who would be good for COB, but she hesitated for a moment before saying. "And I believe Liang Shao would be an effective Chief of the Boat."
Evelyn glanced up towards the commander as she detected the hesitation and frowned. "I've read Miss Shao's record, and I have to agree. But, I detected a hesitation when you mentioned her. Is there a problem I should know about?"
"No. I'm not sure how Jason will feel about losing his Master-at-Arms, but I do believe Liang is the best person for hte job."
"If she's the best person for the job, then he'll simply have to find another NCO for the position," Evelyn said bluntly. "He has 25 other NCOs who should be qualified enough for the position, and quite simply, we need a chief of the boat."
Jayde nodded. "Very well."
"I realize that I may come across very direct, Commander, and if I seem to be rude I do apologize, but I want to get the crew through these changes and everything settled down before we take on our next mission," Evelyn said. "And we don't have a lot of time before we depart, either."
"I have been accused of being blunt myself," Jayde said. "And being unemotional. As long as we are up front with each other, I believe we will be fine."
"That works for me," Evelyn said with a nod. "See to it that Ms Shao is moved to her new position as soon as possible, please. And that Commander Smoak is informed as well. I realize that he won't be happy with the change, but we'll have to manage through the changes and try to get settled in as smoothly as possible."
Jayde nodded. "I will do so. I will also inform Lieutenant Rynn. Is there anything else you need me to do?"
When the Captain shook her head, Jayde bowed and left to make the changes.
