Mission:
Ghost of a Chance: Epilogue
Location: Sick Bay, Doc Office
ON
Velah had sat through the First staff meeting of the new Commanding Officer; the rules were now out in the open, Velah had asked the Counselor to join her in the Sick Bay after the meeting for some Cross-Training Subjects. The New Captain tends to think the ship is primarily a support of the Science Department; from her observation, and being a science ship Velah was fine with that. It also told her how she should guide her staff and support efforts.
Entering the Sick Bay she felt more at home; this is where she Shone the best and could do what is a meaningful purpose. The fact the ship was primarily Science came with the class, identifying life forms is a shared duty with Science but the more in-depth understanding is where the Biology Labs of Science and Medical could either clash or work together? Velah hoped to make it a better cooperative effort by Both Departments to better get results and conclusions. Now Medical is a important entity when combat is concerned ; Science taking a back seat as far as resources are concerned and during most times Medical Labs and personnel can be an aid to Biological study.
These things weighed on her mind as she went to her Office and waited the Head Sato and Rynn to arrive.
Zhara walked in and smiled at Velah. "Hello, doctor. How are you today?"
"I thought I should warn the Medical department of the new standing orders from the Staff Meeting?" Velah answered.
Zhara sighed. "Yes. That. What do you have in mind?"
Miko yawned and stretched as she stepped into sickbay. She was looking forward to another boring, routine day in medical with absolutely no surprises in store. She had a light schedule for the day, which was fine, and that meant time to catch up on other things that needed to be done. As she signed in for her shift, Miko noticed that she was to report to the chief medical officer's office, which drew a sigh and a cross look from her as she turned and headed that way. Stepping into the office, Miko could see someone else standing there, but she focused on Commander Velah. "You wanted to see me, Commander?" she asked.
"Yes I did, please have a seat." Velah gesture to the two open seats across from her. "I wanted to discuss the new 'focus' that was brought to light in the Staff meeting with our New Commanding Officer, our objectives are more clearly stated now." She waited for them to take their seats as she spoke. "Tea or anything from the replicator?"
"No, thank you," Zhara said.
"I'll have a green tea," Miko said as she checked the time. She technically wasn't on duty for another two hours, and since the chief medical officer was offering, she decided to relax just a little. She was also mildly curious, as this was the first she had heard of a new captain.
Velah went to her pot of fresh brew tea and pour a china cup and saucer, bringing it to Miko. There are sugar and cream on the small table if you like?"
Taking her chair again Velah let out a long breath before starting.
"As you know we have a new Captain and from what I gathered from her first meeting she is of the mind that this ship and the departments; including medical, are here to support the Sciences as we are a science craft." SHe smiled. "SO I think it is time we dust off the Medical Labs and get ready to support." She looked to both ladies. I am sure the Captain is not thinking we are really here solely to support science but it is her emphasis." Do you concur Zhara?"
"I'm sure she does not mean to overlook any department, but we are here to explore and in her mind, that means science," Zhara said. "At least until we face something that requires another focus." She shrugged. "My focus is counseling, which is needed at all times, but I'm happy to take a refresher course in Academy science."
Miko took a sip of her tea before she raised her eyebrows and sighed. "I studied biology and botany as minors while at the academy, but my primary studies were on my medical studies. Does this mean that medical will be filling in and assisting the science department when it comes to biological scientific based discoveries?"
"It means that we will be filling in anywhere we're needed," Zhara said. "Because, as a science ship, we all need to be ready to step in."
"At least we can show a need for all those fancy toys we have in the Biology labs and the knowledge to break-down and analyze things. Might be a fun change from the routine patching of Holodeck and clumsy accidents we have as routine." Velah snickered. "Besides if we solve a few problems in the future we might be able to order the newer instruments?" She nod.
"It could, yes," Zhara said. "But that won't happen until we get back to the Federation."
"Everything on this ship is already state of the art and brand new," Miko said. "But it would be nice if we got to use them. Even Sickbay hasn't been doing much lately."
"Then it's high time we did," Zhara said. "Every other department gets to train. Why not ours?" She turned to Velah. "You set the time and I'll clear my calendar."
