Divaro looked up from his computer terminal as he felt the ship shudder and rumble slightly. That was followed immediately by the computer calling " Red Alert! Red Alert!..."
"What the hell...?" he muttered. "How the hell can you have a red alert while in orbit of your own home planet?"
Then the computer intoned "Explosion in Science lab 3, deck 8. Explosion in Science lab 3, deck 8... all containment protocols are in place."
Divaro then slapped his combadge. "Divaro to Walker. Explosion in Science lab 3, deck 8. Get a repair crew there on the double and I will meet you there."
As he left his office, he could hear Walker calling for the personnel she would need on the repair crew. Bolting for the nearest turbolift, he ordered it to deck 8. When he arrived at the Science department, he could see that the explosion had left the lab in shambles. The door to lab 3 had been blown off its' tracks and the lab itself had been completely wrecked. Two or three of the crew were standing around, seemingly uninjured but most likely dazed by the explosion. Their faces, arms and hands seemed to be streaked black by smoke and residue from the explosion, but otherwise they seemed okay. Approaching the closest one, he asked "What happened?"
"I don't know, sir..." she answered. "I was working on an experiment on the other side of the lab and suddenly I heard someone yell to evacuate. I ran for the door but the explosion went off before I could get there. It knocked me down and by the time I could get back up it seemed like the whole place was nothing but smoke and fire. Then the fire suppression system kicked in and...well...here we are."
"Was anyone else in here?" Daniel asked.
"Yes sir--Commander Grey and another officer, but I don't know who he or she was. I think they've gone to sickbay."
Divaro's first thought was that he wondered if Lieutenant Val had been the other officer there in the explosion, but he knew he could not let personal concerns cloud his judgment. He had to get this problem worked and get the science lab back in order.
"I have a repair crew on their way so they should be here any minute," he said." And speaking of sickbay, that's where you three need to be as well," Divaro said.
"But sir," one of the others said, "We have experiments still running in there that we need to see about."
"If they survived the explosion, they will still be there when you get back. If you're not in top form, you'll be no use to anyone. Now--get to sickbay before I have to make that an order."
"Y-yes, sir..." The three crewmembers answered almost as one, before heading off to sickbay.
Just about then, Walker and her repair crew arrived. "The cavalry has arrived," she said with her famous cheeky grin.
"That lab is pretty well beat up," Divaro said, jerking his thumb toward the lab door. "Get anyone you need for as long as you need, but let's get that lab back in working order. We don't have long, I'm guessing, before the new CO reports aboard and I want this ship to be in Bristol fashion when he does get here."
"You got it boss..." Walker said with a grin before turning to her crew. "Alright, you heard the man--let's get it done," she said as they entered the now burned-out science lab.
