Mission: The Genesis Legacy

[CONTINUED]

[OLD]

Flying about two hundred meters above them the aviary creatures were a sight , their feathers on ther body and wings were mixed with shades of blue and orange and other colors that while airborne made them harder to see against the artificial sky. It was a masking effect and Velah wished she could have gotten a better angle; focusing her probe and magnification she could sight in the individual 'bird' in question among a small flock of them. The head like a blue jay and a slightly wider yet similarly shaped beak with several feathers vertically on the back of the head; giving some rudder like effect Velah guessed. The body was not all that muscular nor adorned this bird was meant to fly for speed by the way the feathers remained trimmed. The control feathers on the edge of the wings were a beautiful sight in their color and just the way they spread so efficiently.

"Now that sounds like what on Earth we would call a 'Polecat from Hell." Velah chimed in as she was scanning the general area with her probe making steady panoramic 'views' and all the scanned date as well. "I have some flying creatures , not overly large forty centimeter wingspan. "The talons seem typical of a small preditory bird but not enough to harm anything above a rodent sized creature, they seem content on where they are flying."

Jayde continued to look around as they walked the perimeter path. To her, the first thing to do was take a complete lap around the interior, then cut across the middle to see what she could find farther in. She fully expected to have something try to attack them, whether it be insect, rodent, or avian.

On the first lap, they found several more avians, some enormous mosquito-like insects that followed them for a while, then tried to land. Jayde didn't want to find out if it carried any diseases. Every time one got close, she would smack it out of the sky. It was good practice as well as being prudent.

So far, everything he heard and seen, lead him to believe that Romulans had began working on a way to repeat the Genesis Project that Starfleet had once worked on. This was potentially dangerous for all involved. He couldn't help but remain vigilant and cautious. Had this mission continued the way it did he would have to stick to his protocol, acting against the First Officer's orders, and begin erraticating this potential information in this place. He found it had to believe that the current Romulan officer of their crew knew nothing of this. Either way, nothing changed. His goals were clear. Even if it was against his crew, he would have to stop the information from the progress from spreading by destroying it.

"This place is not new," Liang said quietly to Jayde. "It has been abandoned for many years. Over 50 years if the tricorder readings are accurate."

"Long enough that it has been forgotten by the Romulans," Jayde agreed. Sevena said she knew nothing of such an experiment and the First Officer believed her. "So the question is, why did it fail? It is not the same as the Federation's Genesis." She indicated a large fern-like plant that quivered as they passed. She'd learned about Project Genesis while working with the Maquis who did not have the same strictures as Starfleet. From what she remembered, it wasn't the project itself that was classified but how they did it.

Jayde and Liang kept their voices low so that no one overheard them. Both were sensitive to Tristan's views on the project and had no desire to antagonize him further.

Jayde paused to collect another sample and was surprised when the frond slapped her for taking a sample. "Fascinating. I apologize," she said to the plant, bowing formally before moving on.

Liang noticed something partially hiden by the underbrush and bent to retrieve it. It was a large tooth, much like that from a giant feline. She held it up to Jayde. "We must be more careful."

Tristan placed his hand on the handle of sword as he looked around, cautious of their surroundings. This was a dangerous place and an even dangerous situation. With a emotionless look on his face, he continue with the small group, his head and eyes darting back and fourth to make sure they weren't taken off guard. He needed to look for his opportunity to turn this place into ashes and leave no trace behind. He didn't want to. He didn't want to harm anyone in the process, but if they didn't understand and they left him no choice, he would hold them off.

Gallant III completed his check of the Communications system and found it to be in good working order. He went back to the controls and keying the internal speakers set it for a scrambler noise so no one aside from perhaps the empty OPS chair next to him would be able to hear. HE keyed the Security Protocols to lock down the control systems as the Pilot of this vessel, his coding assure no one less than a Command Officer could over ride the controls. HE had been assigned to secure the ship while the team are on the asteroid. The retina scan, palm, typed sequence were all completed. "Secure Code Alpha November Foxtrot seven two four Blue Blue Tango Zeta Execute."

The computer acknowledged the security protocols while he checked all around him for any other red lights, now only Commander Jayde could over-ride his securing the ship as is normal protocol under questionable circumstances, the lack ofcommications with the ship would did fall under those conditions as he checked the Chronometer.

=^= Gallant to Commander Jayde.=^= He began. =^= How are you fine ladies getting along down there. We still have a comm blackout with the Hyperion, I have secured your ride home so take your time ladies.=^=

"We are fine. Scan the Hyperion," Jayde said. "And make sure they aren't in any trouble."

Gallant III switched to the OPS station and began the scan from the Runabout. The overall systems on first scans show nothing wrong, the energy outputs appeared normal as he checked the fact no defensive systems were active but the communications array was getting power but not transmitting.

=^= Commander, I get the feeling they are not answering our calls but the phone might just be off the hook while the systems show power feeding them but nothing going out.=^= He explained. =^= I get the feeling we are like a suitor trying to call after a bad date.=^=
