Mission: Into the Raptor's Shadow

The transporter beam returned John to the Hyperion, leaving him standing on the pad of transporter room two in a slight daze. The events of the evening had been almost too much, almost to the point that he wanted to walk straight to the bridge and order the helm officer on duty to break orbit and put the ship on a direct line of sight course to the nearest star base. Unfortunately, that wouldn't do. The Hyperion had her orders, her captain had to deal with the hardships of being her commander. Taking a step forward, John tapped his commbadge. "Theisman to Jayde, meet me in the arboretum please," he said before signing off. Not knowing her exact location, he took his time. It wasn't a long walk before the doors to the arboretum opened and he walked inside.

Jayde arrived a couple minutes later. She'd been writing up a report of the evening's activities in case Starfleet asked for it later. She found the Captain and gave him a half-bow. "How may I be of assistance?" she asked.

"I just had an encouraging conversation with our good friend the Romulan senator," John said as he stood near one of the small koi style ponds. "Apparently, despite the Romulan government's assurances, there is a lot of anger about the Hyperion having the access to the Empire that it has, and not everyone in the Empire is happy with us being here. The Galae can't promise our safety everywhere we go, and the security of the ship and crew is paramount, despite our orders of exploration."

"I noticed their attitude," Jayde said. "It is my hope the altercation will improve relations, but it will be dangerous as long as we remain in Romulan territory." She, too, was concerned, even though she would not admit that to more than the Captain.

"I'm glad we're in agreement," John said. "Because I've decided on a course of action that will answer two questions at the same time. In addition to being chief of security and tactical, I've decided to name you executive officer of the Hyperion unless you have any objections."

Jayde was surprised by the offer. "Executive Officer?" she asked. "I have no objections," she said a moment later. Indeed it would be an interesting challenge. One she might enjoy.

"Good. I'd really like to keep you on as chief security and tactical as well as first officer, unless you have someone in mind who can take over your department," John said. "Is this a sudden decision, or have you been considering this for a while?" she asked.

Jayde thought about her department. "Not right now, no. I do not even have an assistant." However, if she found someone competent, and who was willing to work with Liang, she wouldn't mind bringing them in as an assistant or the chief. But thta would be for a later time.

"Alright then. I'll leave it up to you to find a suitable replacement for chief of security and tactical then. Unless you want to cover both positions," John said with a nod.

"Is this a sudden decision, or have you been considering this for a while?" she asked.

"I have been thinking about it for some time," John admitted. "We're going to be on our own, and the security of this ship's crew is paramount. Naturally, you were the first officer on the list to replace Commander Grey. After tonight's fiasco, I'm dead set on the fact that this ship needs someone who will approach every situation with a combat based mind set, someone who is prepared to jump to red alert and act first instead of reacting when things have already gotten bad."

Jayde nodded in agreement. "It is far better to be prepared for any possibility and attack it head on than find yourself always reacting. Otherwise, you too often find yourself at the mercy of others."

"That was my thinking, at least," John said with a solemn nod. "The Romulans are going to test us every chance they can, and even they admit that they don't know what's inside their borders in most areas."

"Indeed," she said, her eyes lighting in anticipation. "It will be a fine challenge for the crew. We will all learn a great deal from this adventure." She, for one, looked forward to the challenge.

"And hopefully, we'll live to tell the tale," John said with a slight chuckle. "I'm glad you're willing to take on the additional position, Mira."

Jayde gave him a half-bow. "I hope you will say the same when we get back to Federation space."

"I'm sure that my opinion of you as an officer will remain respectful and in good standing. Now, I need you to go put on a red shirt," John said.

One side of Jayde's mouth quirked up in a half smile. "Yes, sir."
