Mission: Into the Raptor's Shadow
Romulus. The blue and green jewel of a planet that hung in the blackness of space, always with its twin two faced planet Remus in tow as they both orbited their primary star. The space around the life bearing Romulus was alive and buzzing with the traffic of over two hundred ships, most of which were Romulan military but a few civilian ships. It was a rare and unusual thing that a Federation star ship also approached Romulus, but the Luna class star ship known as the USS Hyperion slowly approached the planet and its ring of defenses.
John felt the tension of the entire crew as the Hyperion eased through the outer system defenses and slid closer to Romulus. The Romulan Galae kept an entire fleet on station in the home world star system of the Romulan Empire, which came to a grand total of nearly one hundred fifty capital ships, most of them the large and older but still very dangerous D`deridex class war birds escorted by the agile and deadly Shrike and Talon class ships that John knew well. He also spotted a number of newer ships as well, even at least two that he didn't recognize. As Ensign Gallant banked the Hyperion towards the bright green and blue orb that was Romulus, John flinched as the communications station beeped. The officer on duty turned towards the station for a moment before he turned towards John.
"Sir, we're receiving a transmission from Romulus. Senator Tavik tr'Kellian is asking to speak to you," the officer reported.
"On screen," John said as he carefully leaned back in his chair, taking care not to bump his sore leg that still hurt from the training exercise on the holodeck. He wasn't surprised that the senator had contacted the Hyperion so soon after the ship had made orbit. The Romulans were nothing if not efficient as well as sneaky. "Helm, continue on course and enter standard orbit of Romulus."
The screen came to life with the image of an elder looking Romulan male in what appeared to be a civilian uniform. Behind him John could see an open window and a view of the sea that the Romulan capital city bordered on. "Jolan'tru and Aefvadh, Captain Theisman, I'm Senator Tavik tr'Kellian. Let me be the first to welcome you and your crew to Romulus. I know that your journey here has been long and I hope uneventful. I regret that I can't welcome you to a face to face meeting at the moment, however I have been instructed to invite you and your senior officers to a formal dinner this evening at 2000 hours by your clock."
John had to control his initial reaction, which was to stare blankly at the screen in surprise. Instead, he nodded. "Senator, on behalf of my crew, I thank you for your invitation. My officers and I will beam down at a time and location of your choosing."
"We will give you coordinates shortly. I hope you like Romulan ale, captain. Until tonight, then," the senator said before the screen blackened and returned to the image of the forward view.
John sighed and leaned back in his chair before he tapped his commbadge. "Theisman to all senior officers. Meet in transporter room two at 1945 hours in full dress uniform. Be ready for a full formal dinner and a late night," he said before signing off. Standing, he turned to the senior officer of the watch who was on the bridge and nodded. "You have the bridge. I need to go take a nap," he said before heading towards the turbo lift.
