Mission: Pathways
John had always hated the Starfleet Command complex. It was nothing more than a holdover from being the son of a Starfleet Admiral who insisted on exposing his family, John in particular, to Starfleet. The complex wasn't anything special, at least not to John. The primary complex sprawled across the north side of the San Francisco bay area, while Starfleet Academy covered the south side. A few other buildings were scattered throughout the city. Over the decades Starfleet had slowly taken over the city. Even Alcatraz had been taken over by Starfleet.
Ignoring all of the splendor and trying like hell to avoid running into his own father, John navigated the halls of Starfleet Command mostly from memory. A few things changes every once in a while. This admiral's name moved from this door to another one level up, that yeoman received a commission and transferred to the field, that office was taken over by another department. There was always something, but the basics remained the same. The office of Admiral Vokar hadn't moved or changed in the thirty years he had held his position of Director of Exploration. Every five years or so he had a new yeoman, but that the only change. John managed a smile as he approached the door to Vokar's office.
"Captain Theisman to see Admiral Vokar," John said.
"Go right in Captain. He's expecting you," the yeoman said.
John nodded and marched forward into the office. The inside of Vokar's office hadn't changed ever since the first time John had set foot inside. A desk at the exact center of the large bay windows that overlooked the bay, a few bookshelves with old fashioned books and modern padds as well as an uncomfortable couch and a number of chairs scattered throughout the office. Vokar was sitting down at his desk when John walked in, and he set the padd he had been reading down and stood.
"Captain, Please come in. I trust you took the time to visit your father?" Vokar said.
"No sir. My orders were to report to you immediately. I'll comm dad when we get through here," John answered as he came to a stop before the desk and patted the back of one o the chairs.
"Please sit," Vokar said. "I'm afraid you may not have time to visit with Admiral Theisman after you leave my office, Captain."
"He'll understand I'm sure," John said with a touch of bitterness in his voice. "So why am I here when my ship is at Utopia Planitia?"
"As of this afternoon, you are no longer in command of the Proxima. You have been reassigned, but of course Admiral York should have explained this to you by now," Vokar said as he frowned.
"He mentioned a transfer. Not much else," John said.
"Effective immediately, you are the commanding officer of the USS Hyperion, our newest Luna class ship. You will go aboard and assume command no later than by 1600 hours tomorrow. You will have one week before you depart to Romulus."
"Whoa, wait just a damned minute there. You want me to take an exploration cruiser to Romulus?" John said hotly.
"That is correct. The Romulan Empire has signed a treaty with the Federation that allows Starfleet to send one ship into Romulan territory and beyond in the effort of exploration purposes. We have an agreement in reverse as well," Vokar said.
"What kind of access will we have?" John asked.
"Your contact on Romulus will be EnRiov Tavik tr'Kellian. He will fill you in on the limits of the Hyperion's access to Romulan space and introduce you to the liaison officer they've appointed for this mission. Are there any questions?"
"None Admiral," John answered as he stood. "With your permission, I'd like to get to my ship and get her ready for departure."
"Granted," Vokar said.
John nodded once and turned away, mostly to hide the smile that was forming across his face as he walked out of the office. Luna class ships were the most desired ships to he posted to, but there was always a waiting list of transfers for officers and crew. Captains were lucky if they were even put on a waiting list. For him to snag the newest Luna class ship and be assigned to explore the Beta Quadrant starting with the Romulan Empire, he couldn't help but grin. It was turning out to be a decent day.
