Mission: Ghost of a Chance
Location: Holodeck

ON

Jayde was surprised that Liang scheduled her for weapons qualification when they trained together almost every day. But she wasn't going to ignore the official summons. She had to set the example for the rest of the crew. Besides, she enjoyed weapons training.

As per her custom, she dressed in a pair of loose slacks and blouse to allow for better freedom of movement. Her collapsible staff was clipped to her waist.

She walked onto the holodeck and looked around for Liang.

The doors opened as Smoak walked in. "Alright. Let's shoot something today." He said with a slight laugh before looking up and stopping. His smile faded as he looked around. "Wait... " He brought up his PADD and tapped it, bringing up the file. It was right there, but somehow he missed it. "Damn."

Jayde spun around. "Ja..." His sober expression stopped her from using his given name. "I'm sorry." Her tone was quiet and polite, masking her inner dismay at seeing his smile fade when he saw her. "I must be in the wrong place."

"No, you're not." Jason said softly as he walked over to her. "I forgot, prior to our meeting on the last holodeck, I scheduled myself to handle your re-certification."

And he now regretted it? "If you'd rather not, I can leave," she said quietly. She wasn't sure what to say, or how to react. He had every right to see to her recertification. After all, it was now his department and she couldn't blame him for wanting to see if she was keeping up with her training. But why did he react as if he was sorry to see her?

"No. It's best to get it out of the way." Jason said as he tapped the PADD. "Computer: Run Re-certification program Smoak 1. Authorization: Akamai Koa (Smart/Clever/Intelligent Warrior)."

A table appeared a few feet away from where they stood, On the table were several styles of phasers, but no revolver or TR-116. Jason removed the projectile weapons from the test. In the distance were several targets, each at a certain distance, one farther then the next, to measure distance and accuracy.

Jayde looked over the weapons and the targets. "All right," she said. She would treat this like she did every recertification because that was the only way to be fair to both of them. She could not let her personal feelings keep him from doing his job. She glanced at him again. "How do you want to run this?"

"We'll work on target practice, then move to a scenario I set up." Jason said softly. "We'll focus on the weapons on the table first. The computer will monitor your distance and accuracy. I'll focus on your technique and style. When we move on the scenario, I'll run shotgun. It's your show from there till you reach the objective."

Jayde nodded. It was straightforward. She was curious about the scenario, but first she had to pass the basics. She picked up a phaser from the table and looked it over. "This one will do." She took her position and began to shoot at the targets, one by one. She had done this many times, but she still wanted to do her best as that is what she expected of herself and others. She hit within the kill radius each time. She was no Robin Hood, but she was good. At least at this. Then again, with practice anyone could be good at shooting stationary targets so she had no excuse not to do well. She wondered how good Smoak was. She was fairly certain he could match her, shot for shot. She hoped they could get to a point where they were comfortable training together. Or if they could be friends, if not more. No. She could not think of that right now. She just needed to focus on the task at hand. At least right now.

Jason looked at the results on the PADD, than to Jayde with a smirk. "Good, but the others aren't option. I want to see you used each of them. I am sure you know that, in the field, we don't always have the option as to what weapon we have and different scenarios require different weapons."

She nodded in agreement. "Yes, I do." She picked up another phaser and shot at the targets. One by one, she used each weapon on the targets, hitting in the kill zone.

When she put the last weapon down, she turned to Smoak. "How well do you shoot?"

"Well enough." Jason smirked a bit, looking up from the PADD, before looking back down. "We've been involved in a few shoot outs back in the day." He paused slightly and raised a brow. "You challenging me, Commander?"

"Now?" she waved a hand to the targets. "We agree this is no challenge to one who takes the time to practice their technique. But I do want to see how you shoot when I am not renewing my weapon certification. So, perhaps later."

Jason laughed heartily before putting down the PADD on the table. "This is a cake walk. A Ferengi could hit those targets. You want challenging, then I can do challenging." He smiled from ear to ear as he took a step back, as if he was enjoying the back and forth. In truth, he was. It felt more like the old times then what they've done recently. "All you have to do is ask me to make it more challenging for you, Elf."

"Ask what?" she asked. She liked a good challenge, but she wasn't sure if he spoke of something right now, during her recertification, or if he referred to something else. "I don't know what you prefer or how you choose to fight." She was also afraid to ask. There was still too much that was unresolved between them. But he was right, though. The target shooting was a cakewalk. She knew there was more, and she was curious about what he had planned for the third phase.

"If you want something more challenging, I can provide, but only at the ladies request." Jason crossed his arms over his chest and smirked slightly.
