Mission: Pathways
Location: Sickbay

Sickbay was empty; or rather it was mostly empty. Lieutenant Junior Grade Miko Sato sat at her desk and went over the list of incoming crew members and suppressed a sigh. Starfleet regulations were very clear that all newly transferred crew members were to report to sickbay for a physical checkup within twenty four hours of arriving at their new ship, and so far no one on the list had even bothered to stop by. Since the Hyperion's new chief medical officer hadn't even reported on board for duty, that job fell to Miko, since she was technically the senior ranking medical officer on board. The first name at the top of her list was one Lieutenant Junior Grade Élan Val. A joined Trill assigned to the science department who had recently been in close proximity to the explosion in the chemistry lab, and who had not yet reported to sickbay for her initial checkup or her post situation checkup. Miko was determined to change that as she reached for the communication control built into her desk.

"Lieutenant Élan Val, report to sickbay immediately," Miko said. Signing off, she brought up the science officer's medical records and waited.

Élan paused at the unfamiliar voice summoning her to sickbay came across the intercom. Whoever the speaker was, the woman clearly didn't sound like she was in the mood to either wait or reschedule whatever torturous exam she had planned. With a sigh, Élan ducked her head and started towards sickbay. It didn't take her long to arrive, since she had visited her quarters briefly to change following the chemistry lab explosion. She had changed into a skirt variant uniform, since she still hadn't taken the time to unpack her regular clothing, complete with a pair of three inch heels that were definitely outside Starfleet regulations. Her skirt was a little shorter than regulation as well, but so far no one had ever complained. Arriving at sickbay, she was surprised to find the facility empty with the exception of a very exotic looking Asian woman.

"I'm Lieutenant Élan Val, you called for me?" Élan asked.

"Yes, you're overdue for two checkups, so I need you to step into exam room one and remove your uniform jacket," Miko said as she pointed towards the exam room in question.

"I really don't think this is required," Élan said.

"I didn't ask what you thought, Miss Val. I simply stated that you were overdue for your checkups. And you're wasting my time. Now get in there," Miko said.

"Fine, fine, I'm going," Élan said as she stepped into the exam room and unzipped her jacket.

"How's the symbiont? Any problems?" Miko asked as she unfolded a medical tricorder and started scanning the Trill.

"Val's fine. She gets a little hyper when I eat dark chocolate and caramel, but nothing else that's outside the usual warnings we're given when we're joined," Élan replied.

"Did you eat the chocolate and caramel at the same time?" Miko asked with a frown.

"Well, yeah, it's a candy bar I eat sometimes," Élan said.

"Trill symbionts sometimes have odd reactions to food mixtures. Val is fairly young from what I can tell from your medical record. Younger symbionts can have an odd assortment of reactions to some foods. Try cutting back on the candy bars for a while. How have you both been since the chemistry lab explosion?" Miko said.

"Is there anyone who doesn't know about that?" Élan asked, rolling her eyes as she asked the question.

"I doubt it," Miko answered as she finished her scan and checked the results.

"We're both fine. Val is a little . . . well, she's been a little excited ever since the incident," Élan said.

"Your adrenaline levels are a little elevated, so that makes sense. It's nothing serious or that you need to be concerned about. Elevated adrenaline levels are normal after situations such as the lab explosion. Everything else looks good as well," Miko said as she saved the scan file and turned her gaze up to the science officer.

"Ok, put your jacket back on. We'll schedule another checkup in one week, just to keep an eye on things," she continued after a moment.

"You know I'm not planning on showing up for that appointment," Élan said.

"I would suggest that you change your mind. You can either walk through that door or be on time for your checkup appointment next Friday at zero-nine-hundred hours, or I'll have security assist you in finding sickbay," Miko said in a tone that didn't warrant argument.

"Yes, Ma'am," Élan said grumpily as she zipped her jacket.

"Great!" I'll see you next Friday, then," Miko said with a forced smile before she turned and headed back to her desk.

Élan stared at the medical officer for a long moment before she shook her head and sighed. She needed a break, and she knew the perfect spot in the arboretum to take a break for a few hours. Tugging her uniform straight, Élan walked out of the exam room and after she speared a dark glare towards the medical officer, she walked out of sickbay and towards the arboretum.
