Personality & Traits
General Overview | Kesiane was born telepathically and empathically aware, and despite years of training and discipline is unable turn her telepathy off, though she has learned to function with this near crippling level of awareness. As a result, she has a tendency to be something of a loner, though she yearns for more social interactions. When she does interact with others, she's a very forward individual, often knowing what it is they want before they have a chance to ask it. At heart, she's a kind and compassionate individual, though she often picks up on the attitudes of others and will even mirror those emotions back out unintentionally. She does her best to temper her impatience and frustration, but both usually make carrying on an extended conversation nearly impossible. She balances on the edge of Vulcan discipline and the emotional expressiveness of the Betazoid. Despite her extensive mental training, she never chose the path of forsaking her emotions in favor of the cold efficiency of logic, but she also understands that logic, like emotion, has its time and place. | |
Hobbies & Interests | Kesiane is an accomplished Linguist, but spends much of her free time in deep meditation to control her telepathic skills, which are considerable. She occasionally dabbles in watercolors, painting some of the flowers she keeps in her quarters. She can also play a wooden flute. (see Tam Elbrun for canon reference of Kesiane's telepathic disorder.) |
Personal History | Anilia Lisos and Evekh were both Starfleet Officers serving aboard the same ship when Evekh entered his Pon Farr. Unable to return home and meditation and medication weren't helping his condition, he sought assistance from a friend, Anilia. What was to be a one time thing blossomed into something more and they were eventually married. It was not long after that they conceived a child. Right away, it was clear there was something off about this child as she began to display intense telepathic abilities before she was even born. They knew raising their little Kesiane was going to be a challenge, but both were committed to giving her the best possible chances of living a normal life. Anilia wished to take Kesiane back to Betazed where she could benefit from therapy from doctors and counselors with more experience with this sort of things, but Evekh had them transferred to a remote outpost with minimal crew to reduce the number of thoughts bombarding his child's mind. For a while, it worked. There was still a great deal of stress on Kesiane's mind, but she was able to grow up relatively normally on the outpost, but they could not stay there forever. Eventually their tour there ended and the family was moved to another starbase that was considerably more populated. During this time, Kesiane's father became her anchor, his rigid Vulcan discipline helping to keep her calm and centered even when she felt overwhelmed, but this was no way for Kesiane to live her life always following her father around. When Kesiane was 14, her father took a leave of absence to take her to Vulcan to study discipline with the masters. They stayed isolated in the desert for several years so Kesiane could learn to control her emotions so she would not get so overwhelmed so often and she could better cope when she did succumb to the tides of her emotions and the emotions around her. Once she felt she was ready, they left the desert but remained on Vulcan so she could apply to the Vulcan Academy of Science. This proved to be a good experience for her as she not only earned her doctorate in Linguistics but she also learned how to live among other people. Granted, it wasn't quite the same as living amongst the largely human population in Starfleet, but it was a start. Once she graduated from the Vulcan Academy, she decided to join Starfleet like her parents. That was a considerable challenge for Kesiane, there were so many rampant thoughts and emotions for her to deal with, and she wasn't used to such competition. It was a real struggle for her to remain on top of her grades and performance, but she was approved for the accelerated track considering she already had experience in the field she would be serving in, so she didn't have to deal with the Academy for long. Kesiane's first tour as an Officer was rather unremarkable. She was stationed aboard the USS Icarus as a Communications Officer for almost 7 years and was barely noticed. She remained so reserved and isolated because of her awareness, she never made any attempts to be social with her crewmates nor tried to make herself known to her superiors, she had been content with just doing her job and then returning to her quarters to meditate. During a diplomatic mission to a world under Federation protection, Kesiane's skills were proven to be vital. Her grasp of linguistics saved the mission from a potential misunderstanding which could have lost the Federation a potential new member. Now that she had the attention of her Commanding Officer, it was realized that her skills were being wasted. She was given a promotion and transferred to the USS Moscow as the Assistant Chief of Operations. The CO of the Icarus wanted to keep her, but she had been on his ship long enough and he already had an Assistant Chief of Operations that he wasn't willing to give up. The transfer did not work out too well for Kesiane; while she was adapting well to her new duties, she was not doing so well with her coping techniques. The Moscow was a considerably bigger ship and she struggled to cope with the inundation of voices. Not one to give up, she tried her hardest to make things work, but 8 months into her service with Moscow she collapsed, going into a catatonic state in a desperate attempt to make the voices stop. Once it was realized just how severe this problem was for her and how little assistance Medical could provide, a notation was made in her file to only be stationed on smaller ships. After a brief leave of absence on Vulcan to recover, Kesiane returned to duty, this time on the newly minted USS Hyperion. |
